BRONNO Posted 14 May , 2009 Author Share Posted 14 May , 2009 Hi BRONNO, Super picture, any idea which year, Richard Picture taken post war at Catterick Camp in 1925, several are gallantry winners with Bert Maddocks DCM, Medaille Militaire, Twice M.I.D. late 5th Btn Notts and Derbys on the middle row far right. Would be interested if anyone can identify the older veteran wearing the India General Service and Queens South Africa medals top left.
Andrew Hesketh Posted 14 May , 2009 Share Posted 14 May , 2009 Is the serious looking chap right of centre sporting a Kaiser moustache, or is it a trick of the light? And is he and his pal leaning at a strange angle? Great picture!

And is he and his pal leaning at a strange angle? Great picture! Your eye's are not playing tricks on you, the man with the moustache is as he should be, RSM Maddocks had this strange object under his nose. There is a slight imperfection on the original photo but they are not leaning i think the ground might be uneven, one or two are the same on the other side of the group photo. BRONNO Posted 16 May , 2009 Author Share Posted 16 May , 2009 Picture taken post war at Catterick Camp in 1925, several are gallantry winners with Bert Maddocks DCM, Medaille Militaire, Twice M.I.D. late 5th Btn Notts and Derbys on the middle row far right. Would be interested if anyone can identify the older veteran wearing the India General Service and Queens South Africa medals top left. After hours of searching I have managed to identify the old veteran soldier wearing the Victorian and Great War medal group shown in the earlier picture above. It is 668 ACT/RSM William Saddington who served with the Derbyshire Regiment in the Sikkim and Tirah Campaigns, also the Great War with the Labour Corps and later with the 8th Battalion TF (Sherwood Foresters) until about 1930. Very surprised to see nearly 80 pages of service records on Ancestry showing he came from Southwell, Newark and numerous other places, he had a very long and interesting army service. His medals are kept with the Sherwood Foresters Museum at Nottingham and includes the Indian General Service (IGS) 1854-95 (Sikkim 1888), IGS 1895-1902 with two clasps, British War and Victory medals. Born in 1865, enlisted 1883 and he died of natural causes in 1951. Below is another photo taken at Catterick Camp in 1925. BRONNO.
