Hi All,

I wonder if any Forum member lives near Ampfield, Romsey? I am looking for a photograph of the stained glass window mentioned in de Ruvigny as follows -

Two memorial windows have been put up in St. Mark’s Church, Ampfield, in memory of 2nd Lieutenant Awdry and officers, NCOs and men of the Munsters who fell that day.

2nd Lt Awdry's obit in de Ruvigny reads -

AWDRY, CAROL EDWARD VERE, 2nd Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, son of the Rev. Vere Awdry, Vicar of Ampfield, Romsey, by his wife, Mary Louisa, daughter of Edward Desborough Man; born Broad-Hinton Vicarage, Co. Wilts, 11 June, 1894; educated Marlborough House School, Hove (April, 1903-December 1907), Marlborough College (Foundation Scholar, January 1908-June, 1912), and Royal Military College, Sandhurst (G Company, June, 1912-June, 1913); gazetted 2nd Lieutenant to the Munster Fusiliers, September 1913; joined the 2nd Battalion at Aldershot, 15 October, 1913; went to the Front with them 13 August, 1914, and was killed in action near Etreux, 27 August, 1914, during the retreat from Mons.

I would be very grateful if anyone could supply a photograph of the windows, regards, JPC (Jean)

In the unlikely event that no GWF responds, you could try writing to the vicar or rector, asking if there is a member of his flock who could do this for you. It often works, especially if accompanied by an offer of a donation to church funds!

I live in Romsey, as does Marc Thompson. I'm sure that one of us can manage a couple of photos. We may also have some other information which we can pass on.

Thank you. We should be able to get them, but I'll let you know if not and perhaps you could nip along instead.

Jean, I take it that you're aware of the connection between Carol Awdry and the Rev. Wilbert Awdry, creator of Thomas the Tank Engine? Marc Thompson has supplied me with some material which I shall send onto you with the photos of the window.

Carol Awdry is also remembered on an impressive wooden memorial to the Awdry family in St Cyriacs Church Lacock, Wiltshire.

I have been to Ampfield today and the church is locked...we have to ring up the Church Warden for the keys.

Victoria and Marc - I don't think we should ALL ring up to make appointments - the CW might have a fit, so shall I volunteer, or do either of you know Derek Allen (02380 276350 or Ron Cobb (02380 262953)

The church is generally locked with access made by prior arrangement. Marc has already made contact in the past as part of the Romsey War Memorial Archive project. I'll let you know how we get on. Thanks for your help.

Hi Victoria, I didn't know of that particular connection!!! And manys the evening that I spent reading those stories to my little brother. And again, I never ceased to be amazed at the connections of the Munster Fusiliers. I will PM you with my email address. Jean

The CWGC Debt of Honour on-line record now records Carol Awdry's link to Thomas the Tank Engine. No mention of the Fat Controller, James and the other haulers of freight on the Isle of Sodor. Go to:
