Remembered Today:

British trench maps Somme

Hello GWF,

I am interested in studying the British trenches at the Somme before 1 July 1916. Can I find one online?

I have learned that the British did not make their own trench maps due to security reasons so I wonder if what I search for even exists?

Also, I know that a program Linesman exists for purchase but am not sure if it has the information I want.

Sorry for such a basic question!

Thank you.

To study the British trench system, you need to be looking at the 'Secret' editions. The maps supplied to the troops, only had the German trenches printed on them. We did, however, produce 'Secret' editions, that were for use behind the front at HQ. These were produced and often destroyed, in far fewer numbers, so are difficult to find, even in the major collections.

Thanks towisuk and Smithmaps for your kind response.

Smithmaps do you know if the 'secret' editions are included in the Linesman product?

Thanks and regards,
