bushfighter Posted 2 May , 2009 Share Posted 2 May , 2009 THE SEYCHELLES CARRIER CORPS “Remembering Today” features Carrier Evenord Alcindor, 717080, Seychelles Carrier Corps. Towards the end of 1916 a Labour Force of 791 officers and men was raised in the Seychelles for service in East Africa. The unit performed its duties satisfactorily but the men were very susceptible to diseases such as malaria and bacillary dysentery, and the unit returned home after about six months service. Around 250 men, nearly a third of the unit, died on active service or shortly after returning to the Seychelles. Around 100 other men of French or British descent left the islands at their own expense to enlist in the French and British armies. Many Seychelloiss wished to go but could not afford the sea fare, and government funds were insufficient to finance them. Captain N.P. Jewell enlisted in the East Africa Medical Corps and gained a Military Cross whilst serving in German East Africa.
