jcebell Posted 4 April , 2004 Author Share Posted 4 April , 2004 Christine, Thanks for the great reply! What does Second Reserve mean? What kind of training did these men receive? Were they attached to a particular regiment at the time? Finally, what is a Classification C man? Thanks again, The Bells
christine liava'a Posted 5 April , 2004 Share Posted 5 April , 2004 2nd reserve is a list created from August to October 1917 Classification C means he had 2 children I don't know what training they received, nor whether they were attached to a particular reg't, but some of the 2nd reserve did actually go to war, particalrly those in classification a - no children. Since there is no later entry for him, with a regimental number, I would think he did not actually go overseas. I was at Auckland Archives today, so looked up the will. He died 22 April 1956. His will was written 22 Oct 1954 He left all his insurances to be shared equally between his 2 sons - John Frederick Mallitte, editor, of Auckland, and Howard Leon Mallitte, designer of Wellington J F Mallitte received the moneys from a mortgage held by H L Mallitte, at 14 Standen Rd Remuera, Auckland, also all bank account moneys, and any motor cars Every thing was to be sold by the 3 trustees-J F , HL ,and wife Elizabeth Maud Mason Mallitte, and the proceeds to go to the wife . This seems to be a different wife than the one in 1910
jcebell Posted 5 April , 2004 Author Share Posted 5 April , 2004 This is great info, thanks a lot for this!! It sounds like these men were conscripted, is this the case? Would they have service numbers? Where can we get more info on what they got up to? Thanks again for all your help, The Bells
christine liava'a Posted 5 April , 2004 Share Posted 5 April , 2004 NZ History 1908; population reaches 1 million 1909; compulsory military training introduced 1914; WW1 begins; NZ invades Samoa; NZEF to Egypt 1915 ; NZEF in Gallipoli campaign 1916 NZEF to Western Front; conscription introduced 1917 Battle of Passendaele-3700 NZers killed 1918 NZ division in Battle of the Somme; end of ww1 flu epidemic 1920- Anzac Day established If he had a service no, there would be a file on him at military archives, but he doesn't. I don't know whether there would be files for reservists You could email nzdf.personnelarchives@paradise.net.nz and ask. Quote the entry I have given you about being a reservist.
