Guest Oriel_SSR Posted 3 April , 2004 Share Posted 3 April , 2004 My ancestor L/Cpl Charles James Vaughan was a member of the 1st Batt the Leicestershire Regt when on the morning of the 15th Sept 1916 he, along with 108 others of the Batt where KIA attacking (with the 9th Norfolks) the Quadrilateral to the south east of Ginchy. Whilst Tanks where involved for the first time, it appears the first troops the tanks killed where members of the 9th Norfolks who were fired upon by a tank probably C22, no other tank offered any further support in the attack. It is currently unclear if the Leics also came under this fire. From my research I have retraced the steps of the 1st Batt for the 15 days of September as they moved up the line, stood on the site of the trench and also reached the Quad, something my ancestor and fellow members never did. It appears that the underground complex or part of the Quad may well still exist. With no known grave Charles J. resides on Theipval Pier 2 Face C. If any one else has an interest in the Leic's and this event, I would be more than willing to supply what little I have. Regards Oriel_SSR
