We all know Robert Oppenheimer paraphrased the original text from the Bhagavad-Gita:

Robert Oppenheimer wrote:
Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

Oppenheimer had substituted "Death" for "Time".

It dawned on me from an early age that my grandfather had much in common with this phrase.

I always thought it was fortunate that my grandfather was in the artillery, and not the infantry, for I imagined his chances of surviving the war would indeed have been slim in the infantry, and I would not be here to tell this story.

I will never know how much he was troubled by having killed so many men (and presumably civilians too). Undoubtedly, if you survived the war as a gunner, you would have been responsible for the death of many, many men.

His faith was what gave my grandfather strength throughout his life. He needed it. Not just in war, but in the early years after the war, and later in life when he would suffer the loss of both his children in their thirties. He was my "long-distance" father growing up. We corresponded often and he left a void in my life which remains to this day when he passed away.

In a couple of days, we will be reading about one man from the 61st who's faith wasn't enough to save his own life.

He was like so many other men - troubled by having to take the lives of so many others.

Edward Walshe wrote:
The casualties of war continue long after the killing has stopped.
