New Family Photo Traced

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Thanks to recent posts on the PRO database increase, I have now managed to find medal cards on two more family members.

I have one query on this chap below, a Robert Ernest Cuthbert. I can only seem to find one on the database so wanted to see if this concurrs with Pals view on the image below.

Is this chap wearing Northumberland Fusiliers uniform?

thanks

Ryan

Definitely the Royal Flying Corps. Whilst the maternity jacket is RFC, there was a transition after the RAF was formed in April 1918 and some ORs wore this item well into September 1918. But the shoulder badge is the clincher as this was removed when the RAF came into being - I have a diary entry from my grandfather about this, he wasn't happy to do it! Probably hwy he wore the RFC tie in later years but not an RAF one!!

If your relative transferred to the RAF, his record will be found in Air 79 at the PRO.

Good hunting.

Thanks chaps. That's one great-grandfather and I never knew anymore than this photograph.

Maybe his medal card was lost in the WW2 damage

RAF records unlike Army records all survived as they were stored in a different place. If he did not transfer from the RFC to the RAF that's a different story, his record would have been with the army ones.

I am happy to do the look-up for a small donation to the forum.

Ian your offer is greatly appreciated. How does £10 for the forum sound?

What can be found out?

Ian`s reply reminds me of an ex-RFC OR I knew. I asked him what kind of ceremony they had on the day the RFC became the RAF. (I imagined a big parade, marching bands etc). He said "Ceremony! The Sergeant came into the billet, gave us some shoulder flashes, told us to sew them on PDQ and went out. The ceremony was over!" Phil B

Hi Ian, further to this as the online PRO seems to be playing up would you be able to see if there is a Edwin Frederick William Bird, Born 1869 Died 1940. I don't know if this is of any help but he was christened May 30th 1869 St Stevens Church, Richmond Victoria AUSTRALIA so may have served therefore in an Australian unit in which case would this be a different scenario?

Cheers

Ryan - Did you send CB a £10?

Ok Thanks for your efforts Ian,

Does that mean a dead end? or could Cuthbert be on RAF roll instead?

As for Bird I guess he may be on Australian rolls.

Ryan,

I tried both RFC & RAF :(

We could be looking at Home Service RFC, transferring to an HS Army unit prior to the formation of the RAF (?) - This was the same for Pte Rackman who featured on our Remembering Today early in the new year.

It is no the end of the trail - it just needs moire thought!

Thanks Ian,

As a novice in family history tracing where does that mean I go now?

Cheers

Hi Ian,

All I have exactly is that name and the one photo.

Is there anything more specific you can suggest? I'm not sure I'll be able to dig anything up but will try for you
