Is this a good buy?

I have a chance to buy British War Medal and Victory Medal. Have found who they belonged to and was wondering what would a be a good price.

They are on offer for £70 for the pair, I offered £50.

Is £50 a good offer, I think £70 is too much, what do you think?

Mike.

Hello Mike,

It all depends on who they were awarded to, what unit, was he a casualty or an officer, is there a good story ? An average British War Medal and Victory Medal pair to a line regiment, unresearched would be in the region of £30-40 for other ranks and £70+ for an officer.

He was killed May 1915 1/5th Scottish Rifles. I would buy with a view to re-selling to family at price I bought it. If they wanted it. Ihave offered £50 will see what they say. Thanks Ron.

As you`re probably aware Mike, there`s a 14/15 star missing.

Or maybe a 14 Star - the 1/5th Scottish Rifles landed in France on November 5th 1914.

I thought that too, with the number but his MIC just has the two. Is there another MIC other than the Ancestry one?

Hello Mike,

Yes there will be another MIC with his Star details on it. Have you tried searching Ancestry using combinations of christian name and initials or just his number?

Pte 169 David Hardie 1/5th Scottish Rifles

Do you think it's worth buying the two, in the hope can reunite with the star at a later date?

Mike

I think they definitely should be kept together at all costs.

Possible candidate for the missing MIC?

Mike,

A pair to a non-casualty would usually go for 35-40 GBP and 1914/15 trio to similar would go for 80-85 GBP (or at least prior to the current global meltdown). I've seen plenty of casualty pairs be offered at/sell for 85 GBP and trios for 100-150 GBP, so 70 doesn't sound too bad if you really want it.

You also have the fact that he's a low-number man in a territorial unit, so he's a pre-war enlistee. This also makes him more 'collectable' and there's at least one collector/dealer who pays 'big bucks' for three digit numbers on medals.

Date of death is 1916 according to CWGC so perhaps there isn't a Star MIC?

Hope this helps,

Matthew

Mike,

Don't think he could have a SWB and then be a casualty in France, but willing to be proved wrong. I'd say different men.

Thanks everyone. I may just go for it, that's if someone hasn't beat me too it

I don't want to become a collector but it's slowly happening. I would be more than happy to sell back at original price to family if they wanted it.

I can`t see any reason why he`d need a number change?

HELLO Mike,

In view of the revised date of death, I agree with Matthew perhaps he isn't entitled to a Star. I also concur with his valuations and other comments regarding low number and desirability. Go for it !

Sorry guys I'm getting mixed up again. It's been a long hard day.

I think I will just go for it.

Many thanks all

One last thing, with such a low number, if he had been ill or injured and not gone to France 'til later, could that be the reason for no star?

Although he might have enlisted 1n 1914-15, or before, if he hadn't seen action, or been in France, he wouldn't be entitled to star. Is that a possibility/

Mike

There is every possibility that a man did not go with his unit on a particular date, so its possible in this case. If he was KIA or died of wounds £70 is a cheap price for a Scottish pair. To put it another way buy them .

Cheers welshdoc

I think have made up my mind to do just that.

Good luck on your purchase, let us know how you get on and if the family are interested in having the medals back. I wish someone would make that offer to me for my gt uncles medals.. (That is Pte John McAulay. 300844. A&SH.. You never know :) ) Would be great if the family were looking for them.
