Paul D Kendall Posted 9 April , 2009 Posted 9 April , 2009 Many British citizens who immigrated to Australia enlisted to join the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) when the First World War broke out. A significant number of British citizens were killed at Bullecourt while serving with the AIF. I have listed the British diggers who were killed at Bullecourt during the second Bullecourt battle during May 1917. I am 70% into current project which is writing a book about the Battles of Bullecourt which took place during April & May 1917. The purpose of this thread is to hopefully establish contact with some of the descendants of the men listed. If you are related to any of the listed men and possess a photo of him, and you would like me to include him in my book as a tribute, please contact me at paul.kendall193@btinternet.com. If you are related, I have many photos of the Bullecourt battlefield and memorials which I can share with you. I will also be able to write a piece on him using online sources at the AWM and from his service record at the National Archives of Australia. I look forward to hearing from any interested parties Kind regards Paul Kendall paul.kendall193@btinternet.com Here is the list of British Diggers who died at the Second Bullecourt battle during May 1917. Petroc Posted 9 April , 2009 Posted 9 April , 2009 Paul, You might be interested to know that 4716 Private James Knuckey's brother also lost his life during the War; 4714 Private John Knuckey, again 20th Battalion, died on 28th October 1917 aged just 20 and is buried at the Perth (China Wall) Cemetery in the Salient. The boys' parents resided at Perranwell Station, Stithians, Cornwall, and both were employed as farmworkers in New South Wales prior to enlistment. Best of luck with your research, it sounds fascinating, Andy
Paul D Kendall Posted 9 April , 2009 Author Posted 9 April , 2009 Andy, Many thanks. I was not aware that James Knuckey had a brother who also died during the First World War. Best wishes Paul
Tomkinson Posted 3 November , 2009 Posted 3 November , 2009 Paul I am sure you are aware but many other British men died at 2nd Bullecourt. Main amongt them were those of the 2/6th West Yorkshire Batallion mainly men from Bradford. Included was my great greandfather - Sgt. Harold Shaw who was killed on the first day - 3rd May 1917. I also realise your reseach may be concentrating on the diggers. Bullecourt is now generally regarded as a low point in the relationship between the Australians and the British in command - as per The Blood Tub and I think this has a tendency to overshadow the fact the British also took considerable casualties particularly the 2/6th. These men fought and died alongside the Australians and while there may be some question of the overall leadership in Gough (and perhaps even the quality of the 2/6th) it should not be forgotten that this was a joint operation. Your point that many of the Australians were in fact quite recent emmigrants. Cheers Mike Tomkinson
Paul D Kendall Posted 3 November , 2009 Author Posted 3 November , 2009 Dear Mike, Many thanks for your coemments. I am very aware of the British sacrifice at Bullecourt. My great grandfather, Private William John Kendall was killed at Bullecourt on 13th May 1917, while serving with the 22nd Battalion Manchester Regiment. he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. My book, which is close to completion tells the story of both the Australian and British efforts to capture this village during April and May 1917. I too feel that the British involvement is overshadowed by the Australian efforts and I hope that my work will put that right. I have managed to trace the descendants of approximately 100 soldiers from Britain and Australia who fought at Bullecourt. They have kindly donated images of their brave forbears to include in the book. I have been able to write biographical tributes to these men. If you have a photo of Sergeant Harold Shaw and you would like me to include him in the book as a tribute to him, please get in contact with me at paulkendall291@aol.com. Thank you for your input. Kind regards Paul
Tomkinson Posted 4 November , 2009 Posted 4 November , 2009 Paul Thanks for that and your reassurance that the efforts of all will be addressed. I am trying to track down a photograph of Harold Shaw. Unfortunately despite having a large collection of family photos I cannot find one in there of Harold. It's a bit strange really given that I seem to have photos of almost everyone else. I will re-visit the collection. The 2/6th Batallion were one of the last of the Bradford men to get to France, despite some furious lobbying. There was a feeling that they were a home batallion and they really wanted to get to France and do their bit. They finally got their chance in Jan 1917. Cheers Mike Tomkinson
Archie1 Posted 23 November , 2012 Posted 23 November , 2012 I know this is an old thread but I've only just seen it! He was born in December 1887 in Highbury,London.Sadly we have no phohos. I'd be interested to know how the project is going. Regards Mark
1st east yorks Posted 25 November , 2012 Posted 25 November , 2012 Mark, Paul has published his book. Anthony
paul.hickey Posted 27 November , 2012 Posted 27 November , 2012 Mark I'm assuming you have searched the Australian War Memorial site and obtained his service record from the National Archives. A simple search here - http://trove.nla.gov.au/result?q=10th+Reinforcements+23rd+Battalion - throws up some 10th R, 23rd Battalion photographs. You may be able to refine the search and throw up some more pics. As the 23rd was a Victorian Battalion, a search of the State Library site, or contact with them may give you some leads - http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/ Cheers Paul
Archie1 Posted 27 November , 2012 Posted 27 November , 2012 Many thanks. I have now looked at the Aussie records & found out quite abit.Including a Red Cross enquiry when he was missing, this included accounts from a couple of his comrades . Thansk mark
