ashwellthorpewarmemorial Posted 8 April , 2009 Posted 8 April , 2009 My great uncle William Albert Hudson, Service No. 118130 Machine Gun Corps. I have both his War Medals and I have seen his medal card on the ancestry.com site, which gave me the above information but I cannot find his Service Records or any Pension Record on that same website. He was born in Beckley, Oxfordshire in 1883. Would he have been attached to another regiment first or, already being a good shooter, would he have gone straight into the MGC? And how do I find out which Unit of the MGC he was in? I am pretty certain from family inf. and old photos that he served in India - is there any way I can find out where and when he served. I have also put a similar request on the Units section. Thank you for any help. Ashwellthorpe
mutley Posted 8 April , 2009 Posted 8 April , 2009 Hi he will only have a pension record if he was discharged to pension, in that he was discharged and awarded a pension, normally due to being no longer medically fit to serve. The reason that you cannot find his service papers could be that his have been destroyed. A lot of service papers were destroyed by fire after a bombing during the blitz in the second world war. A look at the actual medal roll might give you more information, but these are held at Kew at the National Archives and are not available on line. HTH Mutley
