Martin Knowles Posted 7 April , 2009 Posted 7 April , 2009 My next door neighbour who is in his 80's told me at the weekend (whilst I was fixing his kitchen light) that his father served in the Coldstream Guards and he recalls that he won a Military Medal (which he sold during hard times). He remembers that he was a Regular and believes that he originally was a policeman and then served from 1904 for three years and was called up as a reserve in 1914. My neighbour recalls that he was at Mons in 1914 and was one of the first men to shoot in anger at the advancing German troops. He survived the war but was gassed and therefore could not return to the police force even though he lived to 85! As his memory is fading does any member have any information on this man that I can give to my neighbour? I know that his parents were Mr C and Mrs S Chipperfield of 16 Arthur Street, Hackney and that his brother George Chipperfield (Royal Fusililiers) was KiA on 11/11/1914 and is commemerated at Menin Gate. Many thanks in advance. Martin
ralphjd Posted 7 April , 2009 Posted 7 April , 2009 Ancestry has a Medal Index Card for a David Chipperfield number 8318 to France 12-8-1914 entitled to the 1914 star bar trio. Ralph.
sotonmate Posted 7 April , 2009 Posted 7 April , 2009 Martin, Unlike a lot of WW1 soldiers, whose records were lost in 1940 bombing, the Guards records still live at Wellington Barracks,London,so you could obtain a copy and develop a story for your neighbour. Knowledge of which Battalion can give you access to War Diaries and the day-to-day happenings. We also have a member called Coldstreamer who can help I suspect ! Sotonmate
Martin Knowles Posted 7 April , 2009 Author Posted 7 April , 2009 Thanks Sotonmate - can I visit them in passing or do I need to make an appointment? Thanks also to rjaydee for the additional info. grantowi Posted 7 April , 2009 Posted 7 April , 2009 Martin, You might have a bit of a problem here. Heres the census from 1901: CHIPPERFIELD, Charles Head Married M 38 1863 Dust Carman Wittington Essex CHIPPERFIELD, Sarah Wife Married F 39 1862 Shoreditch London CHIPPERFIELD, Charles Son M 13 1888 Bethnal Green London CHIPPERFIELD, Emma Daughter F 12 1889 Hackney London CHIPPERFIELD, George Son M 10 1891 Hackney London CHIPPERFIELD, Sarah Daughter F 8 1893 Hackney London CHIPPERFIELD, William Son M 6 1895 Hackney London CHIPPERFIELD, Alfred Son M 4 1897 Hackney London CHIPPERFIELD, Joseph Son M 0 (11 MOS) 1901 Hackney London Showing George and his parents living at 26, Arthur Street, Hackney There is no sign of an older brother called David, their first child was Charles (confirmed by 1891 census) The only David I can find in the 1901 census is: CHIPPERFIELD, David Head Married M 40 1861 Coachman Domestic Wendon Essex, who is married to an Emily and has two young daughters I'll have another look, to see if I have misplaced him Grant Edit - Also had a look at the London Gazette, but couldn't see a David CHIPPERFIELD listed
grantowi Posted 7 April , 2009 Posted 7 April , 2009 I did find a David Nelson CHIPPERFIELD, but he was born in Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1887, so is too young to have been in the police or colours in 1904 His parents are Walter and Jane, apart from David there are six boys and three girls (no George's) living at Row 3 No 2, Kings Arms Yard, Great Yarmouth (in 1901) Hope this helps Grant
Coldstreamer Posted 8 April , 2009 Posted 8 April , 2009 No MM (or other decoration) for a Chipperfield in the Coldstream Gds WW1 8318 joined 17.2.09 until discharge 11.9.16 due to rheumatic fever
Milner Posted 8 April , 2009 Posted 8 April , 2009 The origonal post says the name was David Nelson Chipperfield, so he must be the one born in Great Yarmouth. Surname First name(s) District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Jun 1887 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chipperfield David Nelson Yarmouth 4b 32 On the 1901 census he is still there see below. David Chipperfield age 13 born Norfolk Gt Yarmouth and still living in Great Yarmouth working as Photographers Errand Boy Checking the 1911 census we have this man who is in a Military establishment in Hartley Wintney. Quite possibly this is him. You will need to download the 1911 census information to find out more. (MILITARY) CHIPPERFIELD DAVID born 1888 age 23 Hartley Wintney Hampshire regards Phil
SiegeGunner Posted 8 April , 2009 Posted 8 April , 2009 We often hear of men who are reputed by family lore to have 'won a Military Medal', but who are not found on the medal rolls. A few of these may be cases of deliberate aggrandisment, but most, I suspect, are simply a misunderstanding, in retelling over generations, of 'won a military medal', meaning that he received one or more of the service medals. And in a few cases, of course, it turns out, once variations in name, spelling etc have been resolved, that the man was indeed awarded a MM.
grantowi Posted 8 April , 2009 Posted 8 April , 2009 Phil, The David from Yarmouth dosn't have a brother called George, his parents wern't "C" and "S", and he is far too young to be serving as a policeman in 1904 (even if todays lot do look like it) This was why I didn't include him. Grant
Milner Posted 9 April , 2009 Posted 9 April , 2009 Grant Now I am confused, The title of the original post from Martin was: David Nelson Chipperfield Coldstream Guards, Helping to find out information for his son The reason i listed him is because, he is the only David Chipperfield with a middle name of Nelson, who's birth was registered in the whole of the uk from 1837 till 1920. He may not have had a brother called George, maybe other facts have been lost in the passage of time. So did the first post get the middle name wrong. Martin, can you claify how you got this full name ???? Because Nelson for a middle name is not common, unless there were two men with the same full name and one did not have his middle name registered. The plot thickens..... Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Jun 1887 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chipperfield David Nelson Yarmouth 4b 32 Regards Phil
Chippelsea Posted 17 November , 2009 Posted 17 November , 2009 Hi I can confirm. my grandfather: David Nelson Chipperfield, b 1887, son of Walter and Jane, Great Yarmouth. Joined Coldstreams Guards 1909, listed in 1911 census as based in 2nd Btn at Hartney Wintney. Left and became a policeman, re-called August 1914, fought in all WW1 battles with the Coldstreams until he was gassed 1916, being discharged in 1917. Married my grandmother in 1919, daughter, Martha, and 2 sons, David and Frederick (my father). I can find 6 David Chipperfield's on Ancestry, however, only my grandfather is shown as David Nelson. I am very interested if anyone has further information on his service etc. Hope this helps, regards Chippelsea PS. He was awarded the 1914 Star, Victory and SWB, I can find no evidence of him being awarded a military medal, though I was told by my brother he had received it for carrying his wounded officer back to the British trenches. PPS. Though he did tell me he got punished for breaking his bayonet, it got stuck in the neck of a 'Prussian' and broke when he tried to get it out.
Chippelsea Posted 17 November , 2009 Posted 17 November , 2009 Hi I posted a log above concerning David Nelson Chipperfield, but was very interested in your neighbours information. My grandfather died in 1974, aged 87, was ex-Coldstream, was gassed out, so could not return to the police service after WW1. There are a lot of similarities apart from my grandfather b1887, son of Walter and Jane, in Gt Yarmouth, can you check back with your neighbour? Regards Chippelsea My next door neighbour who is in his 80's told me at the weekend (whilst I was fixing his kitchen light) that his father served in the Coldstream Guards and he recalls that he won a Military Medal (which he sold during hard times). Chippelsea Posted 19 November , 2009 Posted 19 November , 2009 Further information : - The Military Medal understanding is based upon my father seeing an entry listed on a board whilst he was serving in the Coldstream Guards. The MM was awarded during the retreat from Mons, unfortunately, my father past away in August, so I can't get any more information. If anyone is heading to the Coldstream Guards museum, I would appreciate having this confirmed. - I now understand that my grandfather suffered from shell shock and was invalided out with rheumatic fever as his symptoms were reflected in muscle pain. I have been told that he used to kick my grandmother out of bed screaming about incoming shells up to the second world war.
