high wood Posted 5 April , 2009 Posted 5 April , 2009 I have purchased a postcard photograph taken in Gustrow PoW camp of a British Prisoner of War. It is signed on the front, "yours sincerely, E. Parkinson". on the back is the following information: E. Parkinson. 5 Poplar Parade, Waller Street, Holderness Road, Hull, Yorkshire. The soldier is not wearing a cap and no shoulder titles or badges of rank are visible. Does anyone have an idea of who he may have been and which regiment he served with? I cannot locate an absent voters list for Kingston-upon-Hull.
joseph Posted 5 April , 2009 Posted 5 April , 2009 Hi, I have an E. Parkinson on the roll of Honour for Waller St published in the Hull Daily Mail on 30th October 1916, seving in the East Yorkshire Regiment. of the 3 in the MIC's 33343 Pte Ernest KIA 09/04/1917, Son of John William Parkinson 1 Silver St. London Rd Peterborough 201457 WOII Edward transferred to Labour Corps 11th/0741 Pte Edwin Class Z (my choice) I have a few 11th Bn groups if you post the photo I can see if there is a match. The AVL for Hull does excist but is unavailable to the public until the end of the year. Regards Charles
Stebie9173 Posted 5 April , 2009 Posted 5 April , 2009 No mention of POW in the Peterborough man's - Ernest Charles Parkinson - short obituary, and KIA on the first day of Arras suggests very unlikely to be a POW. Also born at Huntingdon, enlisted at Oldham, formerly 25139, Manchester Regt. Steve.
high wood Posted 5 April , 2009 Author Posted 5 April , 2009 My first thought was that he was likely to be an East Yorkshire Regiment man because of the geographical location, though of course this isn't always the case. I had looked through the CWGC entries for an E Parkinson but didn't find any with a Hull connection. I will take a photograph of the picture tomorrow morning and upload it. I have similar PoW photographs in my collection and it seems likely that just before repatriation, a soldier would give a copy of his photograph with his name and home address to his mates who would give similar photographs of themselves in exchange. I even have group photographs of four soldiers with three of the four stating names and homes addresses. Thank you for your help. Simon.
high wood Posted 6 April , 2009 Author Posted 6 April , 2009 The photographs including a close up of the Gustrow stamp.
