Remembered Today:

Netley Cemetery

Recommended Posts

Having paid a visit this morning to this lovely little cemetery (and now I know how to find it ^_^ ), if anyone has any special requests for photos of headstones, PM me and I'll see what I can do. Don't inundate me, but I'll try my best.

There are quite a few Canadians and Anzacs there, plus a number of Germans and Belgians.

Hi Steven,

Thanks for your generous offer, I'll take you up on it for one photo if you don't mind. Would it be possible to get a photo of the grave of Private Eric Thomas Brown, 360, 4th Battalion, Australian Infantry, buried at Grave Ref. CE.1692. He died of wounds on 24/5/1915.

Cheers,

SteveJ.

What about a guided tour???

Well, if any other local members want to meet up there for a stroll round, we could divvy up the cemetery and take a few each.

Not sure about a guided tour ... you'd need someone who knew something for that

The photo requests I'll try and do in the next few weeks.

I might be able to help. Weather permitting I might be able to lead my Easter guests in that direction for a couple of hours, and should be able to take some photographs. Are there any decent pubs nearby Steve where we could compare notes before or after a stroll?

Happy to join in the Photography Parade as long as it isn't Easter Sunday...don't be put off by Steven's understatements though - it isn't really a "little" Cemetery at all although it is beautiful.

Perhaps late Friday morning, weather permitting, would be an idea, with a stroll round the cemetery, and a refreshing glass or so afterwards. We need a meeting/parking point close to a suitable hostelry. Any suggestions?

Steve,

There is a Colonel Lister, RWKs, buried at Netley in November 1922, so not CWGC, but if you come across an officer section, or a 1922 section and see him I would appreciate if you could photograph and take directions to his plot.

Thanks in advance on the off-chance!

Regards,

Jonathan S

Edited: Not 1922 but 1921.

I think this will rule me out, I'm going to be busy over easter

If you go, can somebody take me a photograph of McCullochs grave, I'd like to see the inscription with any relevent dates and reference to his son who was Robert Arthur Douglas McCulloch (d. 02/05/1915)

I hope to be in Southampton this weekend to see a brand new great niece - Esme Alice - she sounds quite "Great War", I think!

Problem is, I don't know which day we will be there. But I will certainly try to pop down to Netley - this thread has given the urge to visit again.

Weather permitting I will try to lead my visitors to Netley around lunchtime, or should it be beertime on Friday.

I will print out the thread and hopefully take any photos requested up to that time. I'll be the mature fogey, white hair and beard sporting a forum badge dragging round two thirty somethings who might be losing their enthusiasm. That'll teach them to visit me at Easter.

Good Friday is an appropriate day to be there and to leave a Cross. We will try to be there (wearing GWF badge). We usually leave the car in Victoria Park and walk through the woods to the Cemetery. There is a cafe in V.Park, and the Prince Consort pub just outside the entrance to the Park in Netley. Have faith - the Thirty-Somethings might catch the bug and not be bored at all...get them to bend up and down taking photos..it would save your back and knees.

When I was their age, I had to take an elderly relative to the area. He has been wounded with the Hampshires in Galipoli and was brought back to Netley Hospital, their ship docking at the pier (now gone, as is the Hospital). His tales brought the place to life for me.

Hope you meet up with you on Friday

Sabine - yes, there are definitely some Belgians! I seem to recall that they are at the front of the cemetery on a lovely little slope up towards some trees. I will certainly take a picture or 2 of them for you if I get there this weekend.

If you are meeting there, I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could briefly pay respects at my great uncle's grave. It is in the Presbyterian section.

Pte. Goldwin McCausland Pirie, 7076

1st Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment

DOW July 1, 1915 received at 2nd battle of Ypres

Buried Netley Cemetery, Grave Reference: N. 337

Photographs and story of Pte. G. M. Pirie

If you look at this map of the burial layout by religion, his grave is located where the x is marked near the middle of the Non Conformist section, to the left and below the Cross of Sacrifice. Map.

Thank you in advance,

M. Pirie

I thought you might be interested in reading the thread I created on the GWF about Netley hospital. It might provide some useful background information prior to your visit to Netley.

I have posted items from my collection relating to Netley hospital and cemetery. The thread showcases the scrapbook I acquired that was created by a visitor to a wounded soldier at Netley during the war years. It includes a page of the original burial register for the cemetery, as well as a page of biographies for soldiers buried at the cemetery.

Link to Netley thread.

I remember reading your thread Marika, and looking through it again is just as interesting. I think it was probably reading the thread that set me looking for a copy of Spike Island. I don't have any poppy crosses to place, but I will certainly pay my respects to your great uncle.

Jacksmum - I'll be looking out for you. The Prince Consort sounds like a good place to finish the visit.

I'm not sure if I can make it on Friday: family duties. I'll try, but if I don't, do I take it you've extremely generously undertaken to do the photographs I offered to do?

Too kind ... I feel a bit of a fraud and a cad if I don't make it.

A cad, egad sir, surely not. However, should you be allowed out, I should be delighted to stand you a pint afterwards.

I will certainly take a camera, more to support your pledge than to usurp it, and will do my best to deliver.
