I have just come across this airfield when looking something else up. I had allways thought that no other site like Stow Maries existed but it seems I am wrong!

The site is near to the city of Cork in the Irish Republic. It was started in 1917 by the RNAS as a base for airships on anti submarine patrol. Like Stow Maries building was still in progress at the armistice and any incomplete buildings were dismantled including the two airship sheds.

Many of the buildings are in ruins due to the theft of roofing materials when the RAF abandoned the site. One building that does survive is the water tower which is of a completely different style to the one at Stow Maries. You can view the remaining structures on www.iol.ie/~mkeniry/ppkilleaghrnas.htm

Is there any thing left of the Zeppelin airfields?

When the weather improves (!) I will go and have a look. Its about half an hours drive from where I live.

Does anyone know what units were stationed there?

If you follow the link it may tell you. It was a RNAS station and as the sheds were not completed it may not have become operational. I could find no reference to there being any unit stationed there though the Navy/RAF records may give a clue if you can find them!

By coincidence I am only about half an hours drive from Stow Maries, their website is well worth a look www.stowmaries.com

It what way? What features about Stow Maries are unique to the site?

I meant that much of the site was still intact as it was at the end of the Great War. All other similar sites have either disappeared or been rebuilt out of all recognition in the past 90 years. The airship sheds at Cardington for example have been re-framed and re-clad, a bit like grandfather's axe!

If of course you are aware of any other sites such as Stow Maries or Killeagh I would very much like to know.

I have at last managed to get to Killeagh.

No sign of hangars but the water tower is still there with what looks like a guard house, a boiler house and a large building which could have been a barrack block.

All a bit battered, with no roofing.

I am still trying to get a site plan, next time I will take a camera!

The read up on the website shows OS maps of both before and after the station was built, but about postage stamp size. But they are out there somewhere.
