Remembered Today:

Easter on the Somme

Ken Lees

Recommended Posts

I've just been informed by the organised member of the household that we are off to the Somme next weekend, so will have a few days in the area from Saturday, 11th.

Are there any events happening, or are there any Forum pals there at the same time?

Ken

We're over just before you - Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th - only specific things so far are the 92nd anniversary ceremony at Vimy on Thursday 9th at 19:30 & one of Teddy's Thiepval Wood tours on Friday 10th at 15:00.

I'll be wearing my Forum badge so if anyone spots us - say hello!

Easter Sunday 12th April. How about a meet at the Ulster Tower at 2pm?

The bourse militaire is on in Albert on and there is one in Pozierers on the same day but by 2pm we should be ready for an egg and onion sanwich, a bag of Tatto cheese n onion crisps and a cup of Phoebe's tea.

Then at 3pm you can all go off with Teddy for his tour.(If you book in advance)

Any takers?

Regards to all.

John,

As you know my dad & myself will be across over the weekend as above, what is the event that you mention at Pozieres ?

The bourse militaire sounds good, and any excuse to visit Teddy & Phoebe will be seized upon.

What time does either bourse start, and where exactly are they held?

Bourse militaire in Albert. Main square where the Marie is. If your facing the Marie there is a modern hall on your right. Thats the place. Pozierers; from Albert, pass Tommy's turn left towards Thiepval, hall is on right in 20 (or so) meters. Not sure of start time, 8.30ish. Will check and post here later.

Thanks John.

I hope to be able to visit one or both and then meet up at the Ulster Tower in the afternoon. If only one bourse is possible, is one better then the other?

Albert is the bigger and better event.

The Bourse at Poziere if anything like the one in Nov is low key, twenty tables max. Lot of relicy stuff, some WW11 and not much that got me excited. It starts early and if on the same day as the one at Albert you could do both.

I can't understand why they don't have the Pozierers bourse on the Saturday. That way some of the trade might do both and up the quality.

Be good to see anyone who can make it.

Mick D. Tell JD I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

John

Ulster Tower at 2pm, Sunday - that's now fixed in my itinerary.

And for recognition purposes at the bourse, I'll wear a badge that looks like my avatar - the T|9|KING's shoulder title.

Looking forward to it.

Hi Ken, just ask Teddy or Phoebe to point me out. Have you booked a tour of the wood?

Regards

John.

Will do, John.

I haven't booked a tour, but I have done it 4 or 5 times before and will probably tag along again if there's one on. Teddy is a fascinating speaker and I never tire of listening. I wish I could speak with such passion and hold an audience's attention as he does on the tour.

Here's a photo of Teddy taking us back in time, ably assisted by my son. It was a sobering thought to think of lads of his age here in different circumstances.

Ken,

Sadly planned Easter trip postponed for reasons of incompetence (passport not renewed) and medical. Hoping to be out there Whitsun maybe for a week. Certainly could do with a break.

Hi

Will be at the Bourse militaire in Albert. Will try and get to the Tower in the afternoon. It will depend on how well the wallpapering and painting is going. Anyone bored of the battlefields over Easter and is handy with roller or brush .......

Hmmm... Battlefields or decorating... tough decision.

But it's good to know there's good local man to take on for the decorating jobs. Hourly rate OK?

Hope to see you, John. So now I'm going to be asking Teddy if he's seen John and/or John ^_^

Home again and looking forward to the next trip already.

I didn't make the bourse at Albert and the one at Pozieres, unless I was there too late, was a bit grotty and not really worth browsing. Next time I'll make the effort to get into the one at Albert.

It was a pleasure to meet up with John and John (and significant others) at the Ulster Tower and my son and I thoroughly enjoyed the chat over a hot beverage. My wife was a little disappointed when she found it that it hadn't been "just men talking about the war", but hey ho, the garden looked better on our return.

The weather was great, too.

Here's to the next time.
