Swally Posted 5 April , 2009 Share Posted 5 April , 2009 Hi Guys, I am trying to find out which regiment my great uncle William Allan served with. I have spoke with his daughter but she only knows that he was in the army and survived being gassed. The very limited information I have is- William Allan (no middle names) was born on 15th July 1895 in Jute Street, Aberdeen to Robert & Elspeth/Elsie/Elspet Allan his last know address was possibly Farquhar Place with his mother in 1914. His father died in 1905. All his brothers served and survived the Great War, serving with the RAMC, Royal Field Artillery, The Royal Scots & Royal Scots Fusiliers. I know it is a bit of a needle in a haystack but can anyone please help? Remember, Allan was the 18th most popular surname in Scotland at that time and Aberdeen was the hotbed for the Allans and William is not that an unusual name! Best Regards, Swally
Debtor Posted 6 April , 2009 Share Posted 6 April , 2009 Aberdonians tended to sign up with the Gordon Highlanders. Try their museum, and the other regiments his bros were in. Ask his daughter if he wore a kilt or not, or if there were any aspects of the uniform that stood out. Each regiment has it's own speciality.
