Remembered Today:

What is a "B.R. Steward"?

This merchant marine crew position keeps popping up in my research. What does the BR mean? Boiler room? Breakfast room? Barroom?

I'm finding references to it all over the Internet, but not one place gives the definition!

Doh! I thought of every room except the most obvious one.

Thanks Gary!

What dates and nationality are you talking about? If it is British post 1948 it could mean "British Railways Stewart". British Railways operated ferries between the UK and the continent and Ireland between 1948 and about 1983.

This was on definitely on luxury liners/troop ships, 1927-1945.

And certainly a tad more prestigious position than the Glory Hole Steward. :)

It is quite amazing the breadth of positions one could have on board a ship in the steward's line of work. I have a bit of info on this so if more is needed, just say so...
