My apologies if this goes over well-trodden ground but I'm trying to find out whatever I can about my grandfather, and from the CWGC site I've found that he served as a Gunner in the 322nd Siege Battery, RGA, service number 110296. Can anyone tell me more about where this unit would have been deployed, or point me towards the best places for research ? I'll also post on the 'Soldiers' subforum about his personal details.

Many thanks,

David W.

The National Archive, Kew, holds the following War Diaries for 322 Siege

WO 95/4465 322 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery 1917 Oct. - 1918 Apr.

WO 95/4796 322 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery 1918 May - 1919 Mar.

322 Siege were formed at Prees Heath in Dec'16 moving to Italy on the 16th Apr'17 arriving on the 21st. On the 24th Apr'17 the are allocated to the 95th Heavy Artillery Group until the 17th Oct'17 when the battery leave for Egypt arriving on the 20th.

On the 4th of April'18 the battery is allocated to the 61st Heavy Artillery Group and on the 9th May, together with the 61st HAG, move to Salonika arriving on the 16th inst. On the 6th Sep'18 they are allocated to the 37th HAG and then back to the 61st HAG on the 20th Sept'18, they then remain with this group through to Nov'18.

Apart from the above the diaries of the aforementioned groups may provide extra detail. i.e.

WO 95/4206 95 Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery 1917 Apr. - Sept.

WO 95/4795 37 Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery 1917 Mar. - 1919 Mar.

WO 95/4796 61 Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery 1918 May - 1919 Mar.

Stuart, my apologies for not getting back to you for two weeks, but much more than that, my sincere thanks for the time and trouble you've taken to provide so much detail, and a list of where I should look at the National Archives for more information. Your generosity of spirit means a great deal to me. Until recently I've known nothing at all about my paternal grandfather, and I didn't really know where to look next, so you've been incredibly helpful and I really appreciate it.
