MACRAE Posted 4 April , 2009 Posted 4 April , 2009 A friend of mine was asking if his Grandfathers medals had been sent to the family as he was killed in action . I looked at his Medal Index Card and there is noting on it to say they had been sent or claimed . He would like to know where they are if possible. Point of intrest is that his grandfather is the ONLY great war casualty in the graveyard. Dan Name: HENDRIE, ROBERT Initials: R Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Serjeant Regiment/Service: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Unit Text: 33rd Bn. Age: 23 Date of Death: 09/09/1918 Service No: 22940 Awards: M M and Bar Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hendrie, of 24, Rutland Avenue, Paisley Rd. West, Glasgow. Born at Ayr. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Near North-West corner of Church. Cemetery: COULLEMONT CHURCHYARD
River97 Posted 4 April , 2009 Posted 4 April , 2009 Dan, That is the ultimate 'sticky' question as there is no mention that the medals were NOT issued or RETURNED. If they were issued they may still be in the family or lost forever. Some collector may have them somewhere or they could be in a Regimental Museum. Hopefully someone will come out of the woodwork and brighten your day, you never know. Cheers Andy.
old-ted Posted 4 April , 2009 Posted 4 April , 2009 Morning Dan, could there be 2 medal cards for this man? No MM + bar shown on the one you posted. Regards John

Richard Jones Posted 4 April , 2009 Posted 4 April , 2009 Morning Pals, There is a second Medal Index Card (MIC) for his Military Medal/s but is is as Hendrie R, Machine Gun Corps (Not Robert Hendrie). I would say 100% the medals were issued. If they were returned for any reason it would show on the MIC as either KR 1743 0f 1912 or KR 992 of 1923. Regards Mike Jones
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 4 April , 2009 Posted 4 April , 2009 For other ranks and their next of kin there was no need to claim army medals, they were issued and sent by registered post (special delivery). There is sometimes more information on the medal roll, to which this card is merely a quick reference index. It is standard practice for the MM cards to only show initials; the service numbers match. Gallantry medals are not always recorded on these campaign medal index cards. Ancestry still have not copied many of the cards for MID & gallantry medals.
