Can anyone suggest how I can discover the given name of this soldier from Salford of the Royal Engineers.

J McCormick, 24125, RE, mentioned in despatches 14 June 1918 and earned the Military Medal 11 June 1918.

I have checked the NA, just states J. He did not die during the War. Also the Roll of Honour for Salford. I am looking only for a Joseph. Checked the Ancestry files earlier, but only looked for a Joseph and could not find him.

Would be glad of any advice or suggestions please.

Thank you,

Bird

Bird, try a trawl through the local newspapers for the period. MID & MM recipients often had a write up with family details.

Bird,

Just had a look at the Ancestry site and found a MIC for him. Still no first name, however, the MIC is for a Meritorious Service Medal. Date of Gazette is 11/06/18 and paper number is 0137/5058. It also states that he applied for a replacement for this on 13/07/1925.

Hope this helps

Cheers Andy.

24125 J McCormick was James.

There are 3 MICs for him at TNA, 2 with initial J and 1 with forename James.

Hope this helps,

Adrian

Bird,

Just found the other MIC.

Seems all his medals went missing as he applied for replacements to these as well.

Cheers Andy.

Dear John, Adrian and Andy

Thank you so much for the information and confirming for me the name of this soldier, James, he could be related to me but he is not Joseph and I can now return to the record I have for Joseph with a bit more confidence. Curiously when I put up his service no. at the TNA he also came up with a woman's award as well! WO 372/23. So, I asked them if they would kindly check this for me. I have not heard back yet.

Thank you all and especially for the medal card. I will retain this as Joseph's father was called James too.

Kind regards,

Pat
