I am researching Martin Holleran {or Hollerin} and can't find out where he was born. He served as a Private, 2541, in the 1st/7th Royal Scots, but was not born in Scotland. He died on 26th December, 1915. I suspect he may have been born in Ireland, but need confirmation. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks John,

That's great news, they may have been added recently.

I have looked at Martin's service records, on Ancestry. U nfortunately they don't give his place of birth, or even date of birth. So, I now know a lot more than I did, but still don't know if he was Irish!

Thanks John and Veklee,

I don't know how I managed to miss the census. It is the right family {there was another Martin in the census}. His brother Henry is there, and also his brother, James W. Hollerin, who died in the Quintishill rail crash. Apparently an M. Hollerin also died, perhaps this was the other Martin.

Hi Alf,

I've seen this and your other post relating to Martin's grave in Netley cemetery. You might know this already, but Martin is commemorated on the War Memorial in Blackburn, West Lothian [as M Hollerin] and there is also a J[ames] Hollerin, also a Private [2410] in the 7th Royal Scots, whose record on the Scottish National War Memorial site fits with the Quintinshill crash. They are the only Hollerins recorded on the SNWM site.

The Blackburn memorial is my 'local' memorial as I grew up in the village. I've toyed with doing some research of the men and have some service records and MICs from Ancestry. I'm not on my own PC at the moment, so I can't check what I've got on the Hollerins, but even though it might be basic, I'll check this at the beginning of the week if that would be helpful to you.

Best wishes

Rockford.

Hello Rockford,

I am researching all the men from Livingstone Parish who fell in the Great War. At that time part of Blackburn was within Livingstone Parish. This means that I am including all Blackburn men in my research. I can let you know what I have if you can PM me your e-mail address.

He could have been of Irish descent, I noticed from the records that he was Roman Catholic (Amongst his effects there was a prayer book). It would not be unusual for the Irish to emigrate to Scotland particulary before Irish independence. After all Sean Connery is of Irish descent.

Hello Phil,

Martin's mother, Martha, was born in Ireland, I have still to confirm where his father was born. I have also still to find out where Martin's parents were married, but I'm hoping to find out some time this week.

Regards,

Alf
