Jonathan_NW Posted 2 April , 2009 Posted 2 April , 2009 Hi all I have been searching for the service history of my Great Uncle, Robert Tetlow. I now know that he served with the 6th Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment. From 1914-1918.net I found the following:- 6th (Service) Battalion Formed at Warrington in August 1914 as part of K1 and moved to Tidworth, attached to 38th Brigade in 13th (Western) Division. Moved to billets in Winchester in January 1915 before going next month to Blackdown. Sailed from Avonmouth in June 1915. Landed at Cape Helles (Gallipoli) 7-31 July then moved to Mudros. Landed at Anzac Beach 4 August 1915. 20 December 1915 : evacuated from Gallipoli and went to Egypt via Mudros. February 1916 : moved to Mesopotamia. What I would love to know in the abscence of his service record is as he enlisted in early April 1915 would he have sailed in June 1915 with the battalion or, more likely, gone out at a later date? Regards Jonathan.
Hywyn Posted 2 April , 2009 Posted 2 April , 2009 Jonathan The only one in Ancestry Medals is Pte 18453. Is that him? PM me your email if you haven't got it. Up to the end of 1915 the Medal Card were marked with date entered theatre. There is nothing marked on his card which tends to suggest he didn't go to Gallipoli. I must say I don't know if this is a 100% hard and fast rule but it may be worth looking up the How to interpret medal Cards on the Long Long Trail. Hywyn
Jonathan_NW Posted 2 April , 2009 Author Posted 2 April , 2009 Thanks Hywyn I have just searched the surviving service records and found another man on the medal roll who enlisted in 6/South Lancs at the same time (April 1915) who was also from Bolton. His record states he was posted to Mesapotamia March 6 1916 which seems a more realistic date and would also tie in to the fact that the date of entry into the theatre served in on the MIC is blank. Regards Jonathan.
