RED47 Posted 2 April , 2009 Share Posted 2 April , 2009 As a "newbie" I would appreciate some clarification on the issuing of medals. The card refers to the medals earned by a relative but the army jargon has baffled me so if possible can 1) somebody translate some of the details on page 1 2) ditto for page 2 3) were medals automatically sent out or did relatives have to apply for them (was there a different procedure for soldiers who were killed) 4) if an application was necessary how can you tell it was made Hope the above is not asking too much Appreciate any assistance Ray

ralphjd Posted 2 April , 2009 Share Posted 2 April , 2009 Ray. Correspondence side of card reads:- Officer i/c RH and RFA Records forwards nominal roll of comm men 27-9-20. Extracted from EF9/4006. EF9 Returned d/d 19-2-23. This was a form sent out to the recipient to be completed before medals (for officers) were issued. He was entitled to the British War medal and the Victory medal this medal only having 2L/T impessed on it, as denoted by the cross with the dots in each segment. He was commissioned 24/12/17. Ralph. keithm Posted 2 April , 2009 Share Posted 2 April , 2009 Lt. Edward W Fowler, 1/7th Royal Warwickshire Regiment. KIA 15th July 1916 The medal card shows he went to France 10-2-1918, so KIA 1916 looks like an error.

Edward Wareham Fowler was Leonard Gough Fowlers' older brother. The information on EW is correct and the date and circumstances of his death are recorded in the War Diary of 1/7th Royal Warwickshire. It looks like his younger brother signed up the moment he was
