per ardua per mare per terram Posted 31 March , 2009 Posted 31 March , 2009 One hundred years ago the fear that the UK would fall behind Germany in the production of Dreadnoughts was being fueled in the House of Commons (there was a motion censuring the government's handling of the navy) and in the press whipped up by The Navy League and Jackie Fisher. This was the second naval arms race that the latter had initiated. In the 1880s the French and the Russians hadn't been goaded into war.
