YES! Been away on a promotion course with the Australian Army for the last five weeks and here we are. That is outstanding. Wow, and it didn't take that long either. Gone, but no longer forgotten. Cheers Andy. P.S. Terry, you are a star.

John_Hartley Posted 3 April , 2009 Share Posted 3 April , 2009 Terry Apologies if I've asked this before - but would CWGC undertake any investigations to establish a place of burial before adding a man to Brookwood? I'm thinking of Lawless who appears to have have had a Salford connection prior to death and whose death is registered in the city. Seems a fair bet that he's buried locally. Would CWGC perhaps have emailed the local cemeteries department to see if they had a burial record? John
Terry Denham Posted 3 April , 2009 Author Share Posted 3 April , 2009 They do make some efforts, yes, but they can only undertake a certain amount - usually when there is some clue already in existence. However, these days the researchers who submit the cases often do it. Several IFCP cases have initially been allocated to the Memorial but later graves have been found. There is no stress having a name allocated to the Memorial as the names will not be inscribed for a number of years yet (waiting for the extension to be built) and there is plenty of time for research to winkle out a grave. chrisharley9 Posted 3 April , 2009 Share Posted 3 April , 2009 I have already found a few graves of those on the Brookwood Memorial a task I took on as part of IFCP - however it is one of those things that I can only when I have some spare time Chris

John_Hartley Posted 4 April , 2009 Share Posted 4 April , 2009 Garry Thanks for your help here. If you're going to try and sweet-talk Agecroft into doing a freebie look-up (and it'll be worth a try, as they'll be able to access all the city cemetery records), feel free to mention the Project is working with CWGC/MoD to find the actual burial sites. If you think you're onto a winner with them, drop me a PM to discuss further. John
shred Posted 4 April , 2009 Share Posted 4 April , 2009 John, No problem, I have sent an email to Agecroft with regards to this matter. Look ups should be FOC, a charge of £15 is only made when extra details are required (although the staff seem to be confused about this). There are many threads concerning this problem at the Salford Forum. Link provided if anyone's interested. Regards, Garry
DDP1955 Posted 4 April , 2009 Share Posted 4 April , 2009 Hi Guys Have any of these Brookwood Memorial cases had thier graves identified yet? I recently found the grave of William Moss after a bit of rooting around. He was a Navy non-commemorated guy! I'll try and find another burial if you let me know who is currently outstanding Dianne
Terry Denham Posted 4 April , 2009 Author Share Posted 4 April , 2009 Several have been found in recent years and had their names 'moved' to their grave sites. You can check the CWGC website for the complete list of names on the memorial. Note that it is not the Brookwood Memorial but the Brookwood (United Kingdom 1914-1918) Memorial which we are talking about. The former is a WW2 memorial and the latter WW1. shred Posted 8 April , 2009 Share Posted 8 April , 2009 Hi Pals, Thomas was buried in Weaste Cemetery 14th October 1915, information found in local paper dated 16th October. "October 14, Thomas Lawless, Ordsall Lane, Salford, aged 30 years" I have a copy if needed. Went to Agecroft who confirm date and that, unfortunately, he is buried in a common/unmarked grave. A plot number coud not be given as records were not kept for common graves. Thomas's burial number is 245618 and he was a Roman Catholic. John_Hartley Posted 8 April , 2009 Share Posted 8 April , 2009 Garry Many thanks, mate. Think we can now regard Thomas as being properly "in from the cold", even though we can't ID a specific plot. Award yourself a large drink. John
