onesearch Posted 31 March , 2009 Share Posted 31 March , 2009 I was wondering if anybody had some information on this. I believe that when a soldier was wounded or sick & hospitalised for a week or more then it was unlikely that he would return to his original unit assuming he regained full fitness, but if he was only slightliy injured & unfit for duty for a few days then he would probably return to his unit. However I was wondering what might happen if a batallion took some casualties resulting in the loss of some specially trained personnel, perhaps snipers or observers. How would such men be replaced? To get a permenant replacement I am assuming that the first course of action would be to request such trained men from those who had completed convalescence & were waiting to be reposted. However if there was no one suitably qualified would a unit be able to ask brigade to allocate suitable personnel from another regiment? The reason I ask is that I know of a soldier who was only wounded once but served with four infantry regiments & while other soldiers have served with more I just wondered what other reasons there might be for a soldier transferring between regiments appart from him being wounded & how the system was supposed to work....... sotonmate Posted 31 March , 2009 Share Posted 31 March , 2009 Rod If you posted the Regiments concerned it might be possible to suggest a reason. Let's say he's in Regt No 1 and gets wounded, when recovered posted to Depot, which I have seen could be another Regiment's (viz West Surrey to Middlesex). He is posted to another Regiment at the Front from there but finds that he is not fit after all and is found no longer A1. He is posted to say,the Labour Corps. But let us see what you have. onesearch Posted 31 March , 2009 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2009 Hello Sotonmate, first of all he was with the K.O.S.B. but was wounded at Loos in 1915, he then served with three other infantry regiments before the armistice. I don't know the timeline for this but you could be right in that although posted after being wounded he was not fully fit, but I know he served with the Seaforth Highlanders seeing frontline service as his second regiment. I was wondering if you have heard of reasons appart from fitness that may account for a soldier to be transferred to another regiment? regards Rod
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 31 March , 2009 Share Posted 31 March , 2009 The army sent people to where it required them. Also sometimes soldiers didn't fit in a particular battalion and were transferred.
sotonmate Posted 31 March , 2009 Share Posted 31 March , 2009 Rod Another reason could have been that a Battalion was reduced to cadre strength by casualties and the survivors were distributed elsewhere. Sotonmate
