Gordon Highlander check

This is Allan Urquhart born 1900 in Aberdeenshire.

According to his obituary (in USA where he emigrated in 1928) he served in the Gordon Highlanders in Scotland during WW1.

He would have been between 14-18 years old during the war. Nothing that unusual but still shocking as it is looking at other war photos e.g. homepage photo on http://www.4thgordons.com

But just wanted to check that this indeed a Gordon Highlander dress. I presume that he is wearing a kilt cover.

Would he have had medals if he didn't see action, because there is one Allan Urquhart from Gordon Highlanders on National Archives Medal cards web pages.

Thanks in advance

This is a fantastic image! clear and great detail.

Obviously a wartime image (unaltered SD Jacket - not tailored for wear with kilt), pattern 14 belt and short puttees rather than gaiters.

Actually I don't think it is a kilt cover but rather a "drab kilt" (basically a khaki kilt) I think much less common to see photos of these as they were unpopular and short lived.

To be honest - as I cannot see a cap badge or even the hint of one on his Tam O'Shanter, and shoulder titles are nearly invisible (looks to be one curved word) then I cannot confirm his regiment. Gordons typically wear belled flashes in their hose and his are not - but I am not sure that is 100% diagnostic.

I have a number of Aberdeen Urquharts with 1/4th Bn connections but no Allan.

I cannot find an Allan Urquhart in the Gordons on Ancestry or at the moment on the National Archives site (I found one in the Pte 25601 in the Scottish Rifles) what is the service number of the one you found? this may help us identify Battalion.

I'll keep looking - really great photo though.

Chris

here is a another young Gordon (in full kit) for comparison of the kilt cover he is wearing with your man's drab kilt. He also has the front of his jacket tailored for wear with the kilt.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for photo!

You were right about the Scottish Rifles, there is no Gordon Highlander with that name, i was hallucinating. Sorry too long in front of a screen,

Prasad

Sorry for taking years to reply. My computer broke and i forgot about some of my lines of research.

I don't know his service number as my only reference apart from this photo is this newspaper which mentions he was in the Gordon Highlanders.
