sabine72 Posted 30 March , 2009 Posted 30 March , 2009 Hello, A few weeks ago I bought a bandolier but from all the english photo's that I've looked there is a different shape . Thanks for your help Patrick second picture
sabine72 Posted 5 May , 2009 Author Posted 5 May , 2009 The husband and I got lucky to see a private ww1 collection last night and that man had a similar one, the shape was the same, he thinks it's canadian and cavalry. anyone here who might have an idea? kind regards sabine
gnr.ktrha Posted 6 May , 2009 Posted 6 May , 2009 Hello Sabine, Good to hear you are up and about. Hows the knee? I will check the WW1 Canadian photo's I have and see if I can see a similar bandoleer. The buckle on your looks very much like a British Sam Brown buckle. All the best, Stewart
Ron Clifton Posted 6 May , 2009 Posted 6 May , 2009 Hello Sabine Nine ammunition pockets certainly suggests cavalry to me. Other mounted services only had five - in the British case, anyway. If it is Canadian and cavalry, there are only a few units it could be from. Are there any stamped initials on it, such as RCD, LSH, FGH or CLH, or even NWMP? Ron
sabine72 Posted 7 May , 2009 Author Posted 7 May , 2009 Stewart, Ron, thank you for the help, the only thing we found was 1917 I'll look at it again tomorow. kind regards sabine
gnr.ktrha Posted 7 May , 2009 Posted 7 May , 2009 Hello Sabine, Just found this photo on the web. It shows a Canadian Artillery man with what looks like a close match for your bandolier. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt...sa%3DN%26um%3D1 Regards, Stewart
Chutist33 Posted 8 May , 2009 Posted 8 May , 2009 Hello Sabine. I have the identical bandolier. It is stamped J E LLeigh & Co. Limited 1916. I was told it was bigger and stronger than usual, because it was made to specifically go around the neck of the horse. However, the photo of the Canadian artilleryman certainly looks similar. No Crows foot or Canadian stamps, but on the inside is scratched " R V Sharp". Yours aye, Jim K
sabine72 Posted 10 May , 2009 Author Posted 10 May , 2009 Hello, thank you Stewart and Jim for the information. kind regards sabine
steenie Posted 30 June , 2009 Posted 30 June , 2009 Hello, thank you Stewart and Jim for the information. kind regards sabine The normal 9 pouch cavalry bandoleer has a gap between the 5 on the front and the 4 on the back. This is shown in the picture of the Canadian Artilleryman. Indeed, as we cannot see his back, he may be wearing the 5 pouch bandoleer. The belt of pouches discussed has no break for the shoulder. Therefore I do not think it is a cavalry bandoleer for use by men across the shoulder. The use of the large buckle may suggest a use as a waist belt but as I have never seen one used like this who knows. As for using it as the bandoleer for around the horses neck, again a break is normal. Again, normally the mans 9 pouch bandolerr is used.
sabine72 Posted 1 July , 2009 Author Posted 1 July , 2009 Steenie we were told that it is a bandolier for around a horses neck and certainly cavalry from Canada Kind regards Patrick
steenie Posted 2 July , 2009 Posted 2 July , 2009 Patrick I was just musing on what it could be. As I have never ever, ever, ever seen an actual horse bandoleer ever . Then who am I to say it isn't! I do know that the cavalry used to use the normal shoulder bandoleer for this purpose, but was this just an expedient? Yours is probably the actual article and if it is then I am glad you have allowed me to see one. Steenie we were told that it is a bandolier for around a horses neck and certainly cavalry from Canada Kind regards Patrick
