Can any Pal tell me what the movements of the 11th Northern Division were after the Battle of Poelcapelle in 1917 please. I am particularly interested in the period 26 Oct 17 to 07 July 1918. I know they took part in the Second Battle of Arras but don't know when they moved into the Arras sector.

Any help appreciated

Any particluar Battalion or the whole Division?

33rd Brigade moved to the Tournehem area some 10 Ks from Watten. They moved towards the Loos/Hulluch sector on 19th October. They left XVIII Corps Fifth army and joined I Corps First Army. They arrived at Mazingarbe on 21st October and this front would be there home for 10 months. In the Loos Brewery, Quarry, Mouse and martyr trenches.

In January 1918 they took over the Hulluch area trenches. The 11th Division formed part of the Canadian Corps for the period up to the end of October.

thanks for the information, I'm particularly interested in the 58th Bde Royal Field Artillery but their war diary has not been digitised, so it will have to wait until I'm going to Kew next. The chap I am researching is gassed some time in 1918 eventually being sent back to England on 6/7 July 1918 and admitted to the Metropolitan Hospital, Kingsland Road, London. He dies in 1920 from TB and pleurisy which is attributed to his gassing. He was wounded once before in 1917 but I don't know which unit he was serving with at the time as that part of his records is burnt away. He then gets sent to France arriving at B Bty of 58th Bde on 26 October 1917.

thanks

The area in which the 11 Div was deployed had a fair number of gas attacks against it. The Div also used gas on many occasions. As each relief took place, every four or five days or so, the Germans laid down heavy barrages of HE and Gas. The month of June looks particularly hot. The 60th Bde were disbanded in feb 1918 which left the 58th and 59th with the Div.

It would be very difficult to pin down a date for his gassing but the rear areas where attacked with HE and Gas on a regular basis in June.

many thanks, I guess I will be extremely lucky to find an entry in the unit war diary that specifically mentions him, but I will give it a try next time I'm down at Kew. He is repatriated to Uk on 7 July 1918 and is admitted to the Metropolitan Hospital in London where he stays for a month.

thanks for the info
