mari Posted 29 March , 2009 Share Posted 29 March , 2009 My Great Uncle, Ozhare Johnson, is listed on a Roll of Honour in Wigtoft Parish Church in Lincolnshire. He is listed as "served at home", and did survive the war. I have looked at the records on Ancestry and haven't been able to find him. He was born in 1893 in Wisbeach Cambridgeshire, but the family settled in the Wigtoft area of Lincolnshire, which is near to Boston. Could some one tell me what it means by served at home please. As he had such an unusual Christian name, I thought it would be easier than this to find him! He eventually married and settled in the Uffington area of Berkshire. Any help would be greatly apprecaited, many thanks.
ralphjd Posted 29 March , 2009 Share Posted 29 March , 2009 Mari, One Medal Index Card on Ancestry a possible 2389 O Johnson 26th Prov Battalion served 10-9-14 -- 16-6-16 I do not know what a Prov (Provisional) Battalion was, perhaps these stayed at home. He married a lady whose surname was Bailey according to Ancestry. The other two O Johnsons mentioned, no christian names, both served abroad. Regards Ralph. mari Posted 31 March , 2009 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2009 I've found some more details about Ozhare since yesterday. There is a Roll of Honour in Wigtoft church (Lincolnshire, where the family lived) which has a list of all men and the two women of the village who served in the war. Ozhare is not only named, but there's also a lovely photograph of him! The very kind gentleman who is running a memorial project, sent me a copy of the photo and some information. It's actually thrown up a bit of a mystery for me, as it states that he joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 16th May 1916, and was demobilised on 6th November 1919. So looking at the record found on Ancestry, he must have served somewhere else before this. On here he enlisted on 18 September 1914, and was discharged 16th June 1916, the cause - "sick". Any ideas please?
