phil@basildon Posted 28 March , 2009 Posted 28 March , 2009 Excuse me if this is allready news. The Veterans Minister Keven Jones and his Australian counterpart have announced that a contract has been awarded for the archaelogical excavation of six mass WW1 graves at Fromelles, France. The existance of the graves was discovered in 2008. The excavation will commence in May 2009 and expected to take 6 months. There could be up to 400 bodies on the site and the intention is to give each an individual grave and headstone. Wherever it is possible to identify remains, named headstoneswill be provided. British and Australian families who believe they have a connection to, or information on, the soldiers who may be buried there are being asked to come forward to assist with the process. DNA samples will be taken from a small cross section of the remains to determine the viability of a larger testing programme. Those who believe they are related to British soldiers on the site should contact the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre. jccc@spva.mod.uk
