Can anyone translate the following Ship's Book List categories, please? They are for a member of the Telegraphist Branch 1909 - 1920.

15-2; 14-2; 16-2; 15-4b-2; 15-4-2; 15-3-2; 12-44-2; 16; 5-2; 16-II; 12-142; 5-II; 5-1; 15-IV-1

I have the impression that the 5s are permanent ship's company and the 15s/16s are 'borne temporary (e.g. for passage).

12 Officers and men borne for service in tenders

14 Supernumeraries borne for temporary service

16 Supernumeraries lent from other ships

List were sub divided

I CPO and PO

II rate below PO

Lists are found in BR31

Thank you, Charles. Was I correct in assuming that ship's company is '5'?

12-142 is indeed a tender (WALLINGTON (Flying Fish)) but 12-44-2 is BLENHEIM - no tender annotation, although she was a depot ship in 1912.

Which leaves the 15s - supernumeraries agian? On second look they all seem to be associated with shore billets/training.

They seem to use 1 or I and 2 or II for above or below PO.

What is the title of BR31, please?

15 Supernumeraries borne for disposal, taking passage, etc.

In all ships with a complement of 60 and above the complement list should be subdivided as follows:

List

5. Military Branch.

5A. Engineer Branch.

5B. Artisan Branch.

5C. Sick Berth Staff.

5D. Accountant Staff.

5E. Miscellaneous ratings.

5F. Schoolmasters in training ships, and seamen riggers.

In ships of complements of below 60 the list should be subdivided;

5. Military Branch.

5A. All other ratings.

Large supernumerary lists should be subdivided as well.

BR 31 is Kings/Queens Regulations
