pcullen66 Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 On a similar quest and came across the following site http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/reunite/lost_missing_a.htm I've had no feedback but you never know you could be lucky. Pol.
Richard Jones Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 Hi Pals, I have searched for my Grandfather's medals for years. No luck. Have now given up and going to buy a good quality set of duplicates. I just wondered if anyone has managed to locate a "Lost" set of medals and how they found them? Regards Mike Jones
Chris_Baker Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 There are dozens, hundreds possibly, of such stories on the Forum. They are not easy to search for but the words "lost", "medals", "found", "sheer good fortune" and "am I jealous" might lead to some of them! I too have been looking for years without success - and in my case for an uncommon name.
toffo Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 Mike, Unfortunately I had no luck whatsoever in tracing my great uncles medals as well, in the end i bought a set of Replica's along with original ribbons so they looked as near to the originals as possible. Another option is to try and purchase blank originals and have them stamped, although this can be extremely costly. Although i do still keep an eye out in case they turn up on ebay etc. regards toffo
Coldstreamer Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 Ive reunited probably 20 medal group or so over the years - it does happen - look on dealers web sites and ebay - I have however not yet managed to reunite a trio only ever two medals or medal and plaque Blank originals are very expensive and the engraving on top will cost - be careful you arent buying erased ones - there is more money sadly in erased medals than ones to say the RE or RA
foggy19 Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 Hi Chaps, These things do happen on this forum. Just last week I placed a post on the 'Look Up, Photos' section of the GWF, asking for help in finding out about a soldier in the Manchester's/Liverpool's. After a day or so I had received some great info, then I had a reply from another member, who explained that the soldier was his wife's Great Uncle. We have had a good chat and the medals will return to their family shortly. If you are interested, take a look at the post ' The medals of Maurice Yacoby', on the 'Look Up etc' section. Best wishes. Bamboo.
MelPack Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 WDB Have a look at this thread concerning the reunification of medals with a family member. It rather puts it all in perspective: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...=102192&hl= Mel
G.Driver 10thLF Posted 27 March , 2009 Author Posted 27 March , 2009 Thanks for the help. I understand it can be a daunting task and that medals can get lost over the years. Or on some avid ebayers collection! Does anyone know where I can get a good replica made?
ianw Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 I think you have to accept that finding such medals can be a lifetime's quest and most likely will be fruitless - but then there are stories of outrageous luck/coincidence etc bringing medals back home. My GF's medals are buried with him so whilst I know exactly where they are, I have had to make do with the exact medals that GF received but awarded to a fellow NCO of his regiment. Personally, I think this is a much better option than replicas.
themonsstar Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 I was lucky that Bamboo posted looking for info on Maurice Yacoby, as now we will be getting back his family medals shortly. This is not the first time the Great War Forum as help me with my families past history. My great uncle Simeon Holden died in the First World War while serving with SWB. Someone was looking for information on him, when I told them who I was, we did a deal and I was reunited with a pages from the family Bible and Simeon's Death penny.
