Agh57 Posted 25 March , 2009 Posted 25 March , 2009 I'm sure this is a silly question and I'm sure most Forum members will be able to answer off the top of their heads, but...wandering around Hill 60 I've noticed what I can only describe as a large rusted spherical shaped object. It is never in the same place twice, but I've seen it each time I've visted. It is not completely spherical, the bottom (or top) is missing but I cannot tell if this is as a result to deteriation over time or some other sort of inflicted damage. Can anyone tell me what it is? I've wondered if it is some sort of mortar or perhaps some sort of sniping cover? Any answers will be gratefully received! (Apologies in advance if it is just a type of sheep food dispenser!)
squirrel Posted 25 March , 2009 Posted 25 March , 2009 As far as I am aware, this is the remains of a marine mine that was placed there at some time. Quite why it was placed there, what for and by whom I am unaware but somebody may, of course, know............
Ken Lees Posted 25 March , 2009 Posted 25 March , 2009 I've heard various stories about this, including that it is a sea mine as used after the war to destroy concrete structures. This one presumably didn't go off if this is true.
Paul Reed Posted 2 April , 2009 Posted 2 April , 2009 It is indeed a sea mine and it's a relic of the old Hill 60 museum that existed in the 1920s and 30s. It has nothing to do with the history of the hill.
Agh57 Posted 2 April , 2009 Author Posted 2 April , 2009 At least that'll stop me having to make something up when I'm there with friends on Saturday!
