franm1962 Posted 25 March , 2009 Posted 25 March , 2009 My son is doing the first world war in history. My grandad George Tempest was in the first world war, He lived in Armley Leeds and I don't know much but wanted to know if anybody knew him or was involved in something with him. I am clutching at straws. Any help would be appriecaited Thanks Fran Morton
sotonmate Posted 25 March , 2009 Posted 25 March , 2009 Fran Welcome to the Forum ! There are 18 hits on the Kew Archives Medal Index Cards for George TEMPEST. These can be narrowed down to 6 if he had no second initial as five of the 18 entries have two cards, which usually means they have one for the 1914-1915 Star or a Gallantry Medal and one for the pair of medals issued to all soldiers who qualified, the British War and Vicrory Medals. There is only one with a single initial for the Yorkshire Regiment,he is 8986 and later 436722 of the Labour Corps. Was your Grandad wounded or medically downgraded during his service, that you know of ? This would often account for a move to the Labour Corps, though I am not saying that this is the man you seek ! If you can confirm his full name and any other small details it will go towards narrowing it down. There are other tools here so your straw to be clutched at might be more substantial,a raft even ! mmm45 Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Theres a pension record on Ancestry for a George Tempest who lived at 1 Lemen Terrace but that is given as Elland Rd Leeds so its not the Armley area but its a possibilty? Married Mary Ellen and had a daughter Mary 1913 he was a Grenadier and suffered Gunshot wounds. Ady
sotonmate Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Fran Ady's Grenadier Guard has 2 Medal Cards, single initial. Once you have confirmed that Ady's hit fits some nice person here might post the Medal Card, and from that we can put you into the area of getting a service record. The Guards records, unlike the rest of the WW1 Army,is fit and well and lives in Birdcage Walk,London. Sotonmate
Admin kenf48 Posted 26 March , 2009 Admin Posted 26 March , 2009 The Leeds Absent Voter List 1914 - 1918 is available online. http://tinyurl.com/c4weow If that doesn't work just google the above I've just done a quick search and it lists 5 George Tempest,(including one in the Labour Corps) but you should be able to pick out your family member. This gives his service number then come back and someone will look up the MIC for you. You can also find out about his unit where they served etc. and if you're very very lucky find a service record but see researching a soldier on the main stie. The web site states the original can be viewed in the Local Studies section of your library which will give confirmation if you know where the family was living. After the War many councils and other organisations wrote a Roll of Honour which included the names of all those who served, although I accept Leeds being a big city, it may have been too daunting a task and I don't know if it will have any more information but once again the librarian in the local studies section will be able to help you. Ken
sotonmate Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Fran You might find this page useful later, once you have decided which George from the Absent Voters List etc: http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/records.htm Scrolling down the page gives you options for each category of service. You now have a raft of straw, with an oil drum or two underneath ! Sotonmate
mmm45 Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Theres 7 Tempests listed on Leeds Roll of Honour. However only 1 George(H) Of the Machine Gun Corps. The Leeds part Of the National Roll may also have info on it but it was pay per entry and doesnt include everyone. Ady
auchonvillerssomme Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Tempest is a good old Yorkshire name and a proud one when it comes to service, particularly in WW1. Mick
Pighills Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Only one George Tempest listed living in Armley of the right age and he's George E Tempest born circa 1889. Matching that with the Leeds Absent voters would mean this is probably your man: tempest george e 133818 l/bombr r g a
mmm45 Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 The George E Kim has found with RGA was discharged with SWB.However his pension records not there on Ancestry.T Surnames on Service Records arent yet online. Ady
Pighills Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 Another possible George has reared his head - a Geo Halliday Tempest. This gentleman was born in 1895 and also lived in Armley. Tieing it up with the Leeds absent voters' list - this would might also be your man: tempest george h 17235 29th lab corps
Pighills Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 .......... and the medal card of this gentleman:
mmm45 Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 tempest george h 17235 29th lab corps Originally Notts and Derby Reg. (ill have to type faster Kim!!)
Pighills Posted 26 March , 2009 Posted 26 March , 2009 I've checked and re-checked 1901 census now and those are the only two possibles from Armley. All we need now is for Fran to come back and tell us (hopefully) which one it is

sotonmate Posted 28 March , 2009 Posted 28 March , 2009 Fran Yes he could have lost his A1 medical grade and been posted to the Labour Corps. Can you put a few more facts here,do any of these guys shown fit his details, did he have other initials etc ? There are here particularly two soldiers with an Armley connection, any positives from you ? There are guys and gals here dying to get it right so that they can feed the story as much as they can! We love this time of year when the scholars have a project ! Sotonmate

He was part of the Tempest family who ran the armley mill so I hope that the guys and girls can find something about him. We do have a family tree and I am trying to get hold of it so we can see. Will keep you posted ok
