The Great War (1914-1918) Forum

I am near to completing a presentation about the officers who commanded the 17th Lancashire Fusiliers during WW1. Yesterday I was shown a postcard group photo (un-named) of the 17th and was astounded (very v pleased) to see it contained one of the commanders.

It made be wonder whether any Forum members had any photos of the 17th Lancashire Fusiliers which they might share with me. I would be more than happy to reciprocate with copies of 17th Fusilier photos that I have.

Look forward to getting some response(s).

Hi Terry

Im new to the forum and this is my very first post (well second my first attempt did work) . . .

My Great Grandfather Henry John Hughes 14126, was with the Lancashire Fusiliers and I believe he was with the 17th Battalion. I have a photograph which says it is of;

2nd Platoon a.co 17th Lancashire Fusiliers is it of any interest to you? I can scan it and email it to you.

Im currently reasearching Henry, the family knew very little about him, but we were told he 'survived' a gas attack. I have been lucky enough to find some of the burnt records via Ancestry, which appears to confirm this. It appears the incident happened around the early part of 1917, he was declared unfit for war by April 1917. Do you know how I could find out information on his service, more specifically around that time?

Thanks

Sam

terryd,

I apologise for encroaching on your thread to answer CURLS question as I have no photos for your enquiry.

Curls,

Your subject has a service record on Ancestry UK. These records are often called the "Burnt Records" and you will see why if you get to see it ! There will not be a lot to learn from it but it's there. He was 19 when he attested in Dec 1914 and was a Lawyer's Assistant from Worcester. His number shown on the Form is 17/14216. He was discharged in 1917 and received a Silver War Badge, later in 1921 receiving his British War and Victory Medals. A form shows that he died in 1922.

For both of you the War Diary at Kew for the 17 LF is under WO95/2484 and you can pay 3.50 to download all of it,from Jan 1916 to Mar 1919,for 3.50 from the NA Catalogue's Digital Express service, but you need to do this in working hours as it isn't on offer outside of those times.

Sorry everyone - I tried to post here earlier this week and messed this up!

My Great Uncle - Private John Parkinson (14186) was with the 17th btn. He died on the 23rd July 1916. Family history research has shown that they were a poor family - so I am not suprised there are no family photo's handed down. He worked at a mill and was catholic - and that is all I know. I would be so grateful for any photo's - of any shape or form from the 17th btn.

Very best wishes to you all.

My great grandfather private Albert Townsend 14694.Lancashire fusillers 17th battalion. I have visited Thiepval war memorial where he is forever remembered.

He died on 23rd july 1916 around trones wood attacking towards guillimont.

Interestingly my mother has a pocket watch presented to my great grandmother by widow of
2nd Lieutenant D. A. C. LAYMAN (died of wounds)-22nd february 1916.

I can only make an assumption that my great grandfather had helped get 2nd lietenant of the battlefield in which he later died in a field hospital in Bethune his personal possessions handed back to his wife in which was engraved and presented to my great grandmother. Sadly my great grandfather was killed several months later.

He has some service papers, which does indeed record that he was awarded the MM (London Gazette, 23/07/1919)
