I have found the service records for the above (albeit somewhat burned) and would like help to find which regiment he was in. This is the info I have:

There is a number written on the card 9091 is this his army number?

The anotation G S Mx appears am I right in assuming he went to the depot for training and then went on to a unit?

I cant find anything else but as I am a beginner tracing WW1 military records I am hoping someone can help.

He enlisted 22 February 1916 and family legend has it that he suffered in a gas attack.

That's all I know - please help!

I have looked in the Medal Index Cards for the name you show. There are 26 Sydney Colemans listed, none in the Middlesex and none with the number 9091. I tried a few alternatives, Colman, missed out the number, only the number (there are over 130 hits on the number !) added a GS in front of the number (yes, they did this )but no hits to fit your info.

This now sets the scene for a twinkle fingers to find it for you !

Can you add any more info from the service records,it might kick off the show.

You would be lucky if they weren't burnt ! At least you have something to look at,over 70% was destroyed by the Luftwaffe 1940.

By the way,did your record come from Ancestry UK ? That will be the best image you can get I would think. Do read it all again and see if there is more to go on.

I assume that the address on the service records makes you believe that this is your ancestor? Looking at the records and with the fact that we can't find a Medal index card its possible that this man - 9091, Sydney Coleman, Middlesex Regt. didn't serve in a theatre of war. Under "Statement of the Services" there is an attestation date but no other dates, normally there would be a date posted to a Battalion, a date entering theatre of war, etc.

I did indeed find the record on Ancestry.

The reason I believe this is my grandfather is that on his marriage cert his father is shown as Frederick as on his record card and this is the closest I have come to thinking I might have found him.

The address on the card was Johanna Street, Waterloo Road, London SE1. On his marriage cert in 1919 his regiment then was shown as 1st Garrison Batallion Northamptonshire regiment but I haven't been able to trace him there either.

I have checked the 1901 and 1911 census and cant find a Sydney whose father was Frederick.

I just think I am starting to get somewhere and then I am not!!

I posted on here under a different sign on (ladybird) some time ago about the 1st Northamptonshire and that drew a blank too.

All I really know is that in Feb 1919 he was still in the army when he married.

but I'm not going to give up!

From your previous post as ladybird this is still the most likely man -

"4.

Medal card of Colman, Sidney

Corps Regiment No Rank

Northamptonshire Regiment 21348 Private

Northamptonshire Regiment 21348 Private

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=2

This man served with the 1st Garrison Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment :D per the Victory and British War Medal roll (Page B229) and survived the war, being discharged to Class Z Reserve on 4-4-1919. His number, 21348, suggests that he transferred to (or enlisted straight to) the 1st Garrision Battalion just after it's formation in September 1915."

On the service records of 9091, Sydney Coleman, Middlesex Regt., he attested in February 1915 and on the last two pages, badly burnt, "...d Recruit". Could this be Transfered Recruit? It could tie in with -

"His number, 21348, suggests that he transferred to (or enlisted straight to) the 1st Garrision Battalion just after it's formation in September 1915." And the discharge date puts him still in the Northamptonshire Regiment when he was married?

Not exactly solid ground I know......but.....

Hi Mig,

Where did he get married, Lambeth ?

What was his fathers occupation on the wedding cert ?

Any chance of posting the card ?
