marsid Posted 23 March , 2009 Posted 23 March , 2009 While researching my fathers WW1 record,I have found that he had two Regimental numbers. His main (?) number (7039)was for the 1st Royal Barkshire Regiment and I have quite service history of his time with this regiment. However none of it states that he was transferred Royal Engineers for which he has a number (163123) These numbers are shown on his Medal Index Card. Would he have been transferred on a temp basis? If so,why would there be no record on his army service record ? Can anyone throw any light on this for me please. Would be grateful for any thoughts on this as I have spent MONTHS trying to find out. Thanks as always Titchy
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 23 March , 2009 Posted 23 March , 2009 Men were transferred @ an alarming rate, due to many reasons to fill spaces, move men with specific skills, following downgrading due to wounds, injury or illness;etc;if you have his service papers they usually record such postings, often in "code" rather than detail. The medal Card would also record the changes in most cases again without detail, just the new number{s} & Corps/Regiment
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 23 March , 2009 Posted 23 March , 2009 It may be that the crucial part of his service record is missing! Possibly there are details of the unit in the RE that he served with on the medal roll.

Titchy Hi Titchy Your father William Barnett enlisted in the Royal Berkshire Regiment 30/12/1902, served his term of engagement and was discharged 29/12/1915. He later re-enlisted in the Royal Engineers as 163123. He was not transferred. We would be very interested in his service record details - can you e-mail me at john.chapman@purley.eu regards John
