whiterose Posted 22 March , 2009 Posted 22 March , 2009 Hi, I think that I`ve read all the MM posts but I may have missed something.I have my man`s MIC card. I know that he was awarded the MM but I can`t find out how to get his Awarded"The Military Medal" Card even after searching the NA catalogue.Perhaps some kind member can point me in the correct direction. Thanks, George
Chris_Baker Posted 22 March , 2009 Posted 22 March , 2009 Go to DocumentsOnline and search just as you would for an ordinary medal index card. Try searching using his number and/or surname only, as most MM cards do not have the full name. And be aware that the collection of MM cards is incomplete and he may be missing.
whiterose Posted 22 March , 2009 Author Posted 22 March , 2009 Chris, Will give it a try. Thanks, George
bigronhartley Posted 22 March , 2009 Posted 22 March , 2009 Hello George, Follow the advice given by Chris. 'Go to DocumentsOnline and search just as you would for an ordinary medal index card. Try searching using his number and/or surname only, as most MM cards do not have the full name. And be aware that the collection of MM cards is incomplete and he may be missing.' If he is there he should have two MICs one for his 'Service Medals' and the other for 'Gallantry Awards' including the MM. Try using name and number combinations because the number on his MM might be different to that on his Service Medals. Regards Ron
whiterose Posted 22 March , 2009 Author Posted 22 March , 2009 Ron/Chris Originally got his MIC free via Library Edition of Ancestry but didnt notice if there was more than one entry.(Just 25p for the print off)On searching NA on line WO372 I see that there are two cards for my man. Walter Poole Private 10922 Hussars WO372/16 Walter Poole L/C 10922 Hussars WO372/23 Iknow that he was promoted and these cards are for the same man so perhaps ,hopefully the latter one is something to do with the MM.I think that his daughter has the London Gazette entry anyway which may help to trace back to the event leading to the award via 15th Hussars War Diaries. Thanks, George
bigronhartley Posted 22 March , 2009 Posted 22 March , 2009 Hello George, The MM Card basically only gives information about the London Gazette entry anyway. The best way to find out about the event leading to the award is to look in the Local Newspapers, if you are lucky you may find a write up and photo. The War Diaries don't always record details. Regards Ron
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 22 March , 2009 Posted 22 March , 2009 Walter Poole L/C 10922 Hussars WO372/23 This is the section of the series that has the MICs for Women's Services, Distinguished Conduct Medals and Military Medals. Many of the gallentry MICs are not yet posted to Ancestry.
Stebie9173 Posted 22 March , 2009 Posted 22 March , 2009 Here is his MM entry in the London Gazette: 10922 L./C. W. Poole, Hrs. (Battle). http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/307...upplements/7013 (Battle is the place of residence given). Steve.
whiterose Posted 23 March , 2009 Author Posted 23 March , 2009 Thank you All for your replies and information. The lady will be delighted.Walter Hillier Poole completed 22years regular service and also served during WW2 on home duties He was also a Chelsea Pensioner. His daughter has the History of 15th Hussars so that will be a valuable source of information. As a long serving regular his service records for the Great War may or may not have been with those affected by the bombing so have contacted Veterens UK for advice.Walter`s daughter intends to visit the Hussars Museum in the near future. Will enquire about possible service records at Kew or wait until Ancestry has reached surnames "P" Regards, George.
