mark f Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 Hi, After some help/info. I have the records of a Alfred James Startup. On his "statement by a soldier concering his own case" he signs it as being stationed at "Wells Next Sea" (I know it as Wells Next the Sea). Where is the barracks that he would have been at. I have been there may times. I was wondering if it was a Hospital/convelacing place. Any info would be helpful Thanks Mark

Any info would be helpful Thanks Mark I know that there were fortifications and gun emplacments all along that part of north norfolk. I remember from visiting the Muckleburgh Collection they had quite a few 1914-18 photos of the gun emplacements and trenches on display. I had to survey the grounds of a cottage next to wells and at the end of the garden I found an WW2 shell case I asked the owner about it and the owner said that the cottage had been used for billets in both wars for the troops that manned the coastal defences. Thats just off the top of my head hope its a help John
mark f Posted 21 March , 2009 Author Posted 21 March , 2009 John, Thanks for that. I too have been to the Muckleburgh Collection. I'll have to go again and look at the photo's. Thanks again Mark
RobL Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 In my research on Sheringham Lifeboat, a further difficulty to get to the boat house during WW1 (which was then located much further out of town than the current station, about a mile out of town IIRC) were the trenches and barbed wire etc to get their way through
