chris basey Posted 20 March , 2009 Posted 20 March , 2009 When I was handed this photo today by a family member of a Norfolk Regiment man I researched some years ago I immediately thought I had a second picture of him. No such luck, I'm afraid. I'm not even sure if they are Norfolk Regiment as the badge is difficult to make out - a larger scan isn't any better. Anyway, it's an interesting picture in which, I think, they are Army butchers carrying joints of meat. It looks as if it's well done although the dog is still keen! What do you think?
Guest Posted 20 March , 2009 Posted 20 March , 2009 I don't think I would be keen on eating it. It's not human remains is it? Mike
MelPack Posted 20 March , 2009 Posted 20 March , 2009 Or perhaps it's the remnants of the frontline British infantry after Bob's pop has torched it singlehandedly?
Adam Llewellyn Posted 20 March , 2009 Posted 20 March , 2009 What could the dog be thinking to its self?
Paul Nixon Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 Hi Chris - how are you doing? I'm sure that dog has its tail between its legs.
SiegeGunner Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 The contents of the tray look (under magnification) more archaeological than gastronomic. There is a flat-topped box-shaped object in the middle, and the lighter-coloured object in front of the left breast pocket of the man standing behind the tray seems to be a piece of machinery/equipment with a round port in it. At the left end of the tray are several objects approximately the shape of cartridge cases. Given the presence of the well-dressed boys, this is evidently a home-front photograph. No idea what it is, though ...
Bardess Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 Cobblers ... they look like boots/shoes to me (without any magnification tools to hand) Diane
Sgt_Hazell_Great_Grandson Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 Way too good looking to be butchers , i say way too good looking to be..
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 I think they're taking part in a "guess what we're doing competition." It looks like they're entering outbuildings to sort out the contents of the tray.
stoj22 Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 Meat or old boots? Perhaps there wasn't that much difference!!
squirrel Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 They look like boots to me as well - battalion cobblers with their next batch of repairs?
phil@basildon Posted 27 March , 2009 Posted 27 March , 2009 They are definately boots, you can even make out pairs.
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 Aren't there some apples too?
matchless Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 I can not see any boots but I can see what looks very much like a skull with a German cap placed on it, in the first tray on the right. Could this be remains that are being brought to the nominated morgue collected from a zeppelin/gotha crash site. That would explain the bits of machinery and it possibly being a home front picture Andrew
phil@basildon Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 That is definately some boots on the left, but matchless could still be right! But would any remains be covered up!
Guest Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 Just wondering if anyone recognises the cap badges? Mike
Michael Johnson Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 Here's a closer look - don't see any skulls. Something has an arrow. Boots and cartridge pouches?
CT-Guards Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 Cobblers..........................with boots, If they were butchers of sorts i'm sure they would have bloodier aprons? Regards
phil@basildon Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 You can make out three separate trays resembling baking trays with what looks like a box of some sort behind them. The aprons they are wearing are the same as that I wore in carpentry lessons at school.
phil@basildon Posted 1 April , 2009 Posted 1 April , 2009 Just wondering if anyone recognises the cap badges? Mike The one on the left has a badge on his right sleeve, could we have an enlargement please? Also the one on the right seems to be wearing a white shirt, did any trades wear a white shirt?
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 14 April , 2009 Posted 14 April , 2009 I know that the meat they had was like old leather... But seriously, can anyone do an enlargement of the badge?
Muerrisch Posted 14 April , 2009 Posted 14 April , 2009 Possibly a Distance Judging star ..... the TF star was for five years [sometimes 4] service. Apart from that, the right cuff should be empty.
