My grandfather fought at loos 25 sept 1915 with the 10th btn glos ,was shot and returned home to folkstone with gunshot wounds,

he then went back to fight again with the 7th battalion Prince Consorts Own , I know he joined his unit on the 16th april 1917 ,i know he was at 14th div hq from june 6th ended up in 1/3 field amb ,3rd canadian field hosp , rtn to battalion back to duty nov 7 back to hospital again 6th dec 4th field amb back to 3rd canadian again .

Theres alot going on in his time there im curious, on where he fought and which battles ,where was 14th div hq and the canadian part , i was always told he was left for dead behind German lines and it is curious he is mentioned as missing on Dec 5th 1917 ,but this could have happened at loos ,it was just something my family said .

any info would be great on battles, hq ,canadian hosp etc

Philip,

Your grandfather appears in the 7th Rifle Brigades casualty returns as missing on the 5/12/17 as you have mentioned. On this day the battalion relieved the 8th Kings Royal Rifle Corps at Passchendaele with all four companies in the front line.

I will have to check what the 7th RB were involved in from the dates you mention although it looks as though he was away from the battalion for some time. The first major action he would have been involved in was at Cherisy on the 3rd May where the left of the 14th Division were halted by machine gun fire coming from Triangle Wood. The 7th RB were in a support role during this attack and suffered 26 killed, 27 wounded and 9 suffering from shell shock.

From the date of his joining the 7th RB the battalion were involved in burying cables near Berneville until the 19th and from the 19th to 22nd supplied working parties for railways. There is no mention of anyone joining the battalion on the 16th but 22 O.R.'s joined the 7th RB on the 19th.

On the 22nd they marched to Daineville and on the 24th moved into the caves at Ronville in Brigade reserve. On the 28th The 7th RB relieved the 8th RB in the line H2 sector in the old German line. On the 2nd May they moved forward to support the attack on the 3rd.

Philip,

From your first post in this thread where you said that he returned to the 7th RB on the 7/11/17 from the 3rd Canadian Field Hospital, I would assume that you are looking for information from the 7/11 until his wounding on the 5/12/17??

Phillip,

From the wealth of detail on his medical history it appears you have some of his Service Record, in part at least.

Can you let us know what you already have? We may be able to wring further useful info out of it.

Cheers,

Mark
