Roger H Posted 19 March , 2009 Posted 19 March , 2009 First, apolgies if this is the "wrong" part of the forum. My Grandfather Herbert Hildreth was injured by shrapnel from a rifle grenade whilst on listening patrol on 11/7/1915 at Kemmel. I am having trouble in deciphering which hospital he was taken to. The first bit is clear - Ist Canadian General. However, the name of the hospital/and or place isn't - it looks like L'Etrefort but it is by no means obvious. Can anyone help?
daggers Posted 19 March , 2009 Posted 19 March , 2009 A quick look at the parent [LLT] site shows a place 'Etretat', where No I General Hospital was from Dec 14 to Jan 19. Could this be it? I do not know about the Canadian angle. D
Roger H Posted 19 March , 2009 Author Posted 19 March , 2009 Thanks for this, but I don't think so. It is definately L' something.
1690philip Posted 19 March , 2009 Posted 19 March , 2009 Have to agree with Daggs, I think its the General not Canadian can you post a copy of it on the thread? Regards, Phil
ulsterlad2 Posted 19 March , 2009 Posted 19 March , 2009 Roger, according to the 1st Canadian General Hospital war diaries, in July 1915 the hospital was located at Etaples.
Roger H Posted 19 March , 2009 Author Posted 19 March , 2009 Good thinking! This is the best I can do.
1690philip Posted 19 March , 2009 Posted 19 March , 2009 It states Canadanian, but I wonder did they mean clearing?????
Roger H Posted 19 March , 2009 Author Posted 19 March , 2009 As I am still relatively new to researching WW1, I am not sure what happened in "clearing" hospitals. However, I do know that he was taken to the hospital mentioned two days after he was wounded and other pension documents indicate he had the shrapnel removed there and not in England.
apwright Posted 19 March , 2009 Posted 19 March , 2009 I think they mean Le Tréport. On other pages on Ancestry (p.843-844), it's written "Letreporte". Adrian
Roger H Posted 19 March , 2009 Author Posted 19 March , 2009 Adrian: Looking at it, I think you may be right! Ulsterlad2: How does this fit (or not) with the 1st canadian hospital war diaries? Thanks all
jhill Posted 19 March , 2009 Posted 19 March , 2009 No. 2 Canadian General Hospital was at Le Treport at this time. Perhaps this is a simple typo. Of course, Etaples and Le Treport are in the same general area, but the hospital diaries seem to differentiate.
Roger H Posted 19 March , 2009 Author Posted 19 March , 2009 James, that is most useful, thank you. My guess is that the name of the place was more likely to be remembered than whether it was 1st or 2nd Canadian hospital so my inclination is that the hospital was in fact the one you refer to.

Terry_Reeves Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 Roger The following chronology is taken from the war diary of 1st Canadian General Hospital. As you will see they were at Etaples during the period under question. 19 Oct 1914 - disembarked Plymouth for Salisbury Plain. 13 May 1915 - entrained for Southampton, landed Boulogne the following day. 18 May 1915 - Etaples. 31 May 1915 - received first patient - 1709 Pte L Joseph D Coy, 4th Battalion, CEF. 21 July 1918 - at Trouville, evacuated there because of continuing threat of air raids. 13 Feb 1919 - main body at Canadian Concentration Camp, Le Havre, awaiting embarkation to England. aliecoco Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 Hi Roger, I 'think' I have a map area of where No1 Canadian General Hospital was in Etaples. Would you like me to send it to you? I had a fab trip in September 2007 to Etaples with two top top forum nurse knowledge people (ie Sue and Terry ((who supplied me with map in the first place!)). If I do have this correct, it is now a housing estate, but right on the main road to Etaples, but used to be next to No26 general hospital as well as No51. I am sure I will be corrected if I have got that wrong! Alie.
Roger H Posted 21 March , 2009 Author Posted 21 March , 2009 Alie Thanks - a map would be really good. I am about to send a PM with my e-mail address Roger
Terry_Reeves Posted 21 March , 2009 Posted 21 March , 2009 Roger I have left you a post on this subject. Alie - would that be my map then? :-) TR
