I am searching for Kenneth Paterson (#7795) who, according to the 1911 census on Find My Past,is listed as serving with E Company 1st Batt,Royal Irish Rifles. He is listed as Lc Cpl.,age 24,single,born in Dublin,Ireland. NOTE: Kenneth,his parents,and siblings lived in East Belfast,NI. Post Office for this Battalion is noted as Alexander Barracks, Maymyo, Burma with Captain L.G.B. Rodney or (Roducy?) in command. Please,do you have any information on the 1st Battalion or those who served? I have looked at some sources on line already.

What is odd is that today,I downloaded a medal card for a Kenneth Paterson,with Rifle Brigade,Regiment No 5561,rank of Serjeant. Is this the same as Irish Rifles?

Any help or enlightenment is appreciated.

Within regiments there could be (and usually were) various different numbering schemes - some battalions (Territorial and some service battalions etc) used their own numbering range starting at #1 (so 5th battalion had a #1 and 6th battalion had a #1) whereas the regulars (and sometime the special reserve/service battalions) typically shared one range. Pre-war the regular range typically rolled over at a certain point and went back to #1 so, if you had a long serving man and a high recruitment level, the numbers could roll back around before the original man with that number had left the regiment!.

 

In your case you can see that Fitzpatrick is #3/9577 for 3rd battalion (special reserve) - the prefix being intended to differentiate him from any other #9577's who might be in other battalions of the regiment. #9577 McGee was a regular enlistment. The R.I. Rifles used a separate numbering range for the 3rd battalion than it did for the 1st/2nd battalion.

Nice one, thanks for the clarification. I wasn't sure if the 1/ 2/ 3/ etc was an official designation alongside the number, i.e. they were always 'married' together. My Grandfather was 9575 (2/9575) though most records I have seen omit that 2/... now I know why. Cheers!

The 1/ and 2/ are not so important as usually the 1st and 2nd battalions used one combined range and there wouldn't be any doubling up. The main issue came from the special reservists, with their own range, as they were meant to bulk up the regulars so the 3/ prefix was important to stop them getting mixed up with a regular soldier of the same number.

 

That being said, prefixes were hit and miss as to when anyone bothered to use them.

I have a passing interest in those listed with numbers close to my Grandfather's that's all and Fitzpatrick follows my Grandfather on one of those Medal Rolls (1914 star). I'm always looking tangentlally for clues, nothing ever really came from the service numbers, but it has from reading the Bn war diaries from those fighting adjacent etc...

Speaking of tangental... Magee shows on the following page of that Roll as 1/9577, Fitzpatrick was 3/9577. Solved

Oh yes it was! It was also mixed up by numerous authors and cartographers in various books, and their errors have been repeated over the years by others... and show on websites online today.

 

My focus is almost entirely upon 2 R.Ir.Rif and the first 3 days. 2 R.IR.Rif were a part of 7 Bde, but were detached to 8 Bde on the 23.08.1914 as support if necessary. 2 R.Ir.Regt were also in 8 Bde at this time, fighting along the same stretch of road approximately 3.5 miles away. The fact that both 2 RIR's were in close proximity has led to this confusion and, as a result, I have had to examine as many original sources as possible to separate the two and be sure.

 

I thought it interesting that the right flank south-east of Mons (at the point where the Germans attacked) was held mostly held by Scottish and Irish Regiments. R.IR.Rif, R.Ir.Reg, Gordon Highlanders, Royal Scots and the Middlesex. I believe the Irish Guards arrived at one point too, but 'remained under cover until withdrawing'.

 

And then there's Caudry, where both RIR's fought in close proximity too!
