BJanman Posted 14 March , 2009 Posted 14 March , 2009 Hi Can anyone advise if the Serbian Order of the White Eagle was awarded to O/R's? All the information I've found indicates it was only awarded to officers. Would it appear in the London Gazette? Thanks Barbara
SteveE Posted 15 March , 2009 Posted 15 March , 2009 Barbara Yes it does appear in the London Gazette, a quick search on "White Eagle" got the following hits....http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/19...d-war-i/start=1 Looking at a few of the results suggests there were at least five classes of the award, all of which were awarded to officers only. A more detailed look should confirm/deny. Regards Steve
BJanman Posted 15 March , 2009 Author Posted 15 March , 2009 Thanks Steve for looking and for posting a link to the London Gazette To be on the safe side I looked into most of them and the lowest rank I found was Quarter-Master and Honorary Lieutenant, so it is probably safe to say that it was not awarded to O/Rs. Cheers Barbara
Staffsyeoman Posted 15 March , 2009 Posted 15 March , 2009 Barbara, O/Rs tended to get Medals from the Serbians such as the Medal of Zeal and the Obilic Medal for Bravery, so I think you're on safe ground.
BJanman Posted 16 March , 2009 Author Posted 16 March , 2009 Thanks Staffsyeoman. I cannot find much information on the foreign awards so that is really useful to know. I have made a note. Barbara
MartinWills Posted 16 March , 2009 Posted 16 March , 2009 I always have a wry smile when I am reminded of the "entertainments" offered by various troupes out in Salonika. One of them (very much tongue in cheek) refers to the award of the Order of the Boiled Owl (Second class). I rest my case.
