Peter,

Not straight forward this one!

No record of him joining the 4th Bn EYR in the War Diary, Battalion out of the line for 9 days and in Divisional Reserve on the 18th September 1917 a long way from Tyne Cot about 6 miles south of Arras near Boisleux le Marc.

I'll double check again later.

Regards Charles

Peter,

No joy on Johns death the 1st/4th EYR did go up to the Tyne Cot area 24/10/1917, no record at all of him in War Diary unusual as they even mention the men by name. All deaths in the battalion in Sept and early Oct in the Arras area.

Nothing specific on John joining the EYR this is from his number group:

He joined the East Yorkshire Regiment with a large group to the Depot EYR (Derby Man?) March 1916, most of the draft posted to DLI 01/04/1916, he went to the 3rd Bn EYR stationed at Hedon near Hull. I have no records of him going overseas but if he did the nearest draft was to the 11th Bn, the 3rd usually supplying drafts to the 1st and 2nd Bn's.

I realise this post is a number of years old but I have been trying to discover who 2nd Lt. John Henry Walker was as he is commemorated on a plaque in Christ Church, Hartlepool. I came across this post and the address of his widow as being 22 South View, Billingham, Stockton-On-Tees made me think this was the man I was looking for. Then I found the attached article in the Yorkshire Post on the 4th October 1917 which seems to confirm this is the correct person.
