Hi There ...

Can somebody fill me in on the details of this Battle, which I believe involved the 09th May 1915

I am particularly interested as I think my great uncle may well have been involved in it

He was in the 1st Battalion, City of london Regiment

I dont have his service papers, so am just trying to fill in the background of his Regiment

Many thanks

Dianne

Hi Dianne,

1/1st Londons were then part of 25 Brigade of 8th Division. I'm currently reading the 8th Division history that Paul's mentioned (infact I just finished reading the Fromelles / Aubers Ridge part last night!). I couldn't see a direct refrence to 1/1st London Regiment during the battle itself (of the London Regiment it was 1/13th Battalion, also of 25th Brigade, that was heavily involved). The first reference is after the battle:

"Four days later, (15th May) the 1/ Worcestershire and 1/ Sherwood Foresters (24th Infantry Brigade) and the 1/ London and 2/ Lincolnshire (25th Infantry Brigade), the whole under command of Brig.-General R. S. Oxley, relieved the 146th Infantry Brigade in the "Ducks Bill" sector, "C", "D" and "E" lines, on the right of the 23rd Infantry Brigade in "F" lines."

cheers

You could do worse than start with the summary of the battle on Chris Baker's Long Long Trail site.
