Michael Johnson Posted 10 March , 2009 Posted 10 March , 2009 Years ago I purchased a Memorial Plaque to Squire Worrall. As you might guess, it is a unique name (although a Squire Worrall served in the British Army), and I rapidly found that 452582 Pte. Squire Worrall had died September 25, 1916, and was buried Boulogne East Cemetery. Thanks to Forum Pal I was able to get a shot of his grave marker. I did a search online the other day and came up with a photo: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/content/collectio...&photo=9210 And even, more interesting, this little news item from 1904: A NUMBER of boys, Thos. Shaw (14), Squire Worrall (15), Eugene Broadbent (13), Joseph Latham (13) and Thos. Hanson (15) were charged before the Borough Justices with stealing about 10lbs of apples growing in the garden of Mr Thos. Warburton, Hardman Fold, Great Lever. Mr J. P. Monks appeared on behalf of Mr Warburton and said that gentleman had been troubled for some months past by his garden being robbed. Mr Warburton did not want to bring the lads there, but he felt it was absolutely necessary if he was to have his garden free from this sort of work. from: http://archive.thisislancashire.co.uk/2004/8/18/473131.html I wonder if it was about this time that Mr. and Mrs. Worrall decided that Canada might be a better place for their boy? Probably not, as his CEF enlistment papers show that he served for six years in the Territorials (King's Own Lancaster Regiment): http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databas...p;id_nbr=323374 He doesn't appear in the 1911 Canadian census.
Canadawwi Posted 10 March , 2009 Posted 10 March , 2009 I sent in that photo/newspaper clipping several years ago. I've checked through my other images pending submission to the Virtual Memorial and don't have anything else. I also send in Toronto church plaques - but he has not turned up on one that I have photographed as of yet. Check back at his CVM entry as I periodically send in more items when I locate them. I do have another newspaper article (Apr. 30, 1917) I'm working on retouching (too unpresentable for the CVM) on a soldier named A. J. Worrall, 38th Battalion, killed April 9th, 1917. He was a Toronto resident, but was born in England. I really can't tell if A. J. Worrall is a relative of Squire Worrall based on looking at the attestation, but I'll just put the name out here in case anyone else is looking at it. The newspaper article did not specify how he died, only that he left behind a widow and 5 children in Toronto, and that he had a number of brothers-in-law in service in the Imperial Army, and a brother in England who was rejected for service, but working at munitions. He shared a home with his best friend William T. Thompson, 124th Canadian Pioneers, who was also killed on April 4, 1917, and left behind 3 children, leaving 8 children without fathers at that home.
