Private John (Jack) Newby Remembered today with Honour

Machinecorps1(1).jpg Remembered today with Honour Private 19659 John (Jack) Newby who served with the 24th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Inf), 1st Sherwood Foresters, (Notts. & Derby Regiment).

Jack was killed in action at Neuve Chapelle on the Somme on Tuesday 6th March, 1917 Aged 25. He is buried in the Hem Farm Military Cemetery, Hem-monacu, Somme, France.

He was the son of John and Jane Newby. Jack was baptised on 5 January 1892, at Barrow-upon-Soar. His father was a labourer. Jack was a former member of The Church Lad's Brigade. His Siblings where Eliza, Sarah Jane, Harry, Emma Lizzie, Wilfred and Frederick William Newby.

Rest in Peace young man.

My Grandad served with 23rd machine gun coy, and survived...never forget those young men that never returned. RIP mate.
